My computer does not register my camera? Can't Post

hello, when I had my last camera, miniDV, the firewire port in my laptop worked fine.

now that I have the Sony HDRHC1, nothting happens when connecting to the computer, both on my laptop and on my desktop.

After reading the manual, I have followed all (I believe) the directions (maybe there is something I missed?)

have the i.link connection set to HDV->DV

have the rec format in DV

Connect firewire to computer first.

Then to the camera.

Power on the camera (and also tried connecting with the power already on)

Nothing happens (this is where my camera would detect the other camera)

Two things I can think of: do you plug in the firewire to the camera when it is powered on? what position is the power switch in when trying to capture.

PS, I love this site. Thanks for all the great input!

You're either running Win2K or XP Pro, Service Pak , right?
This comes up a lot, don't feel bad. Don't let anyone tell you that you need SP2 to make this work; here are the steps:

1. go to control panel/system
2. Click on Imaging device/AVC
3. Right click for "update driver"
4. Tell windows you'll install, in other words, DON'T let it search for driver.
5. Browse to Sound/Video/Game controllers
6. In there, you'll find two Sony folders. Choose the top one, and then choose Sony DVHS driver.

Well, I have tried this camera on every combination of computers/os/firewire cables under the sun and no computer will detect it. (and the pile of tapes i'm sitting on is starting to build up!)

I will bring it in to an authorized sony repair store, under the recommendation of the fine folks at www.idovisualpro.com

I figure that will put the camera out of commision for a while, potentially, unless there is something they can do right there.

What will the result be of me playing a tape i recorded in HDV through a miniDV SD camera?

Will it come out as HDV because it's already been recorded and not going through the HDC's downconverting tool?
Will it come out as SD because it's an SD camera, would it be the same calibre SD as a downcoverted one?

Will it even work?

You're SURE you don't have downconvert already enabled, so it's outputting as SD vis HDV? This happens a LOT. If you're not in HDV mode, the cam will only be seen as an SD device.

I'd be heading to the Sony repair shop then. This would be the first cam I've heard of that isn't connecting properly. Wish we could see you at a seminar (even the free one) we could see what the problem is. It's (in my experience) always been one of three issues;
1. Camera not set for HDV/set to down convert
2. Computer drivers not properly linked/no SP1
3. Cable

In our experience, we have found that HDV tape won't play from a DV deck or camera, because the HDV signal is recorded differently than DV. When a tape recorded in HDV is played back on a DV deck/camera - it will appear blank - no video signal, no time code - nada. zip. It will look as if you're playing back an unrecorded tape. We've tested this with a Sony HVR-Z1 and a DSR-20 deck. If you switch your HDV camera to record in DV mode, THEN you'll be able to play it back on a miniDV camera.

I'm kind of in the same boat you're in. I've been having the same problem with my Z1 not being recognized by my Mac or my Firestore drive. Finally figured out that the problem was the firewire port on the camera. Now I have to send the Z1 in for repair, and have to make do with my HC1 backup camera. Eeek
