NVIDIA Quadro FX 540 and Matrox Parhelia™ APVe alternatives for output to HD monitor Can't Post

In doing a search for HD out on video cards, these two came up time and again as ideal for HD editing. Being as thrifty (cheap) as I am, I'm wondering if there are less expensive alternatives that will provide the same level of performance in monitoring my edits from an external HD monitor. Right now I'm leaning toward the Edius Pro 3.0 solution for my editing software. Thanks a bunch.

The nice thing about the Parhelia is that it'll drive a third monitor such as an HDTV.

That card is definitely on the short list. I guess more to the point is, will the GE Force series of graphics card do the job or is that part of the architecture totally different from the Quadro series?

Sorry for the late responce. I beta test for Matrox and wrote the article on the Parhelia. I am also on the RTX2 beta team. To best answer your question, its important to know if the editing software you are using is going to be graphic card dependant. If its dependant on realtime via the Graphics card, then you might have to go with an ATI 1900xtx or a top of the line Quadro series ($1800+) to give you the best results.

While the Parhelia is a great card, it lacks the processing power most new systems will need. Its off the list if you own an RTX2, AxioLE or Axio, and I have a feeling its not going to provide the power you need for edius, but you need to ask Canopus which card they reccomend for best performance.

In reality Canopus doesn't use the Video Card so I am not sure that it would make a difference.

I have a Dual Xeon setup and with the Matrox card in my system I can get 14 streams of SD video playing without any rendering... 4 streams of HD

Hey Gary,

Thanks for your reply. As Mike said, Edius doesn't really utilize the graphics card for the processing effects and video. I honestly don't know how it does it but it works pretty well. The reason for my inquiry was to see what I could use to output video to an external monitor. I decided to go cheap and get a 7300 GS Nvidia card that retails for $99. It has HD component out and it does what I consider a decent job of outputting video to an HD monitor. If I had to give it a grade it would probably be a B-. Points are taken off for not handling interlacing well and artifacts in fast motion scenes. In other words, it's not quite up to par with an NX Card (which will probably be my next upgrade when the prices go down on it). On the plus side, the picture is very clear and works for day in and day out editing.

I'd love to upgrade to the more expensive cards mentioned in this thread but from what I've heard, the Parhelia and FX540 seem to carry some of the same limitations. I'd really have to sit in front of a computer with one of those cards in it to see for myself before making an upgrade. Thanks a bunch.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies. Displaying HD is dependent on both the display card and the monitor. I have two DELL 2405 monitors for my computer display, and I can use one as just a HD Monitor or force a PiP. The Dell has a slow responce time and does not make the best monitor for viewing HD, dispite my higher end graphic card. Someone from the team is reporting that the Sony HDTV Monitor is the best picture, even though its slightly under the actual display rate of full HD. I can get the model number later. Gary

Chris, is your Gforce card PCI-e? I'm looking for a similar solution but AGP based, I don't have PCI-e on my motherboard and I'm not planning on upgrading until I can get my hands on a dual core dual CPU setup for a reasonable amount of money.

It is but I imagine if they make an AGP model that has component out, it should work the same. Go to NewEgg.com and search their graphics cards for HD Out. You can drill down the list and maybe they'll have an option for AGP as well. You might want to bookmark techbargains.com as Dell will have unpublished specials on their website. for instance, I got my 2.8 dual core with 2 gigs of RAM for only $648 shipped by configuring it to $999 to take advantage of a specail that takes %40 your purchase on computers $999 and above. It seems they always have things like that going on. Another place to check is TigerDirect.com under their refurbished PCs. You can sometimes luck out on a good deal there as well.

Right now I use Edius 3.61 with plans to upgrade to 4.0 when it comes out. Pretty good software. Very happy with it.
