Need advice Buying Sony Z1 and more Can't Post

Hey guys I am buying the new Sony HVRZ1U HD Video camera. I want a mic and light that both attach to the camera. What do you guys recommend. I have 8k to spend but I don’t know if I want to spend that much. Only if its worth it! Also I am looking for a shoulder brace and anything else you guys recommend.

I plan on getting a focus controller and matt box sometime but think I should wait because I don’t think I would be able to use them until I’m used to the camera and lense changing which I don’t do much yet.

For a steady cam I think I was just going to go with the 14 dollar one here http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/

Anything else you guys recommend? Like where to buy the Sony HVRZ1U?

Or any other accessories I missed?

1. You don't need a focus puller accessory unless you are doing a lot of cinematic style shooting and have the camera fully supported on a tripod, dolly, or crane.

2. Why buy a $6,000 camera and stick it on a $10 piece of pipe? That thing isn't even a stabilizer, it's just a weighted monopod. It has no gimbal. I recommend a good tripod and fluid head, and a monopod for when you need more mobility. If you really need steady moving camera shots, take a look at some of the vest-supported rigs from Glidecam, Steadicam, Varizoom and others.

3. On-camera mics are overrated. Figure out a way to get the mic element right up close to the source of the audio...anything from a boom pole and an audio assistant to a wireless mic or an iRiver MP3 recorder. Even so, you WILL need an on-camera mic for this cam...the reports I've seen indicate the stock unit tends to pick up motor and handling noise. Look at isolation mounts; the best are sold by Lightwave Systems, but they're pricey. The Sennheiser ME-66 is a popular short shotgun, but there are many other good choices.

4. On-camera lights are overrated. The light, striking the subject straight on, tends to flatten features. Get the instructional DVD set "Digital Lighting Magic" from http://www.elitevideo.com for some good lighting ideas, many of them low-budget. Even so, having an on-camera light for emergencies is a good idea. Take a look at the little 20W unit sold by NRG, or for a bit more versatility, the Frezzi mini-fill. You'll also need a battery belt or something similar to power the light.

I built one of those, don't waste your time. Spend the extra money on a Glidecam 4000.

$14 Steadycam ?

I just wonder how that guy is getting away by using the word "steadycam" which I believe it is already a trademark if I am not mistaken.

One of these days some attorney on behalf of Tiffen is going to slap him with a costly lawsuit. Good for him that his business is a LLC. Still, he can endup forking out lots of dough.

And you can't fool the courts by making a slight variation to the name, steadycam instead of steadicam, since courts can still construe that as trademark infringement since the slight change of name is not substantial by any means.

Garrett Brown was no fool and I am sure that he established a trademark on the name
