New Sony A1U HDV camera Can't Post

Does anyone know what the LUX rating will be on this camera?

And any thoughts whether the 1chip vs 3 chips will be an issue with this new CMOS chip?

I am at a huge cross road as my Mini-DV SD equipment (PD-150's) are near the end of their lifespan and I need to upgrade and get new cameras SOON but I am really having a hard time deciding whether to go HD or not. The low light issue bothers me as that's so crucial with the dark churches and wedding receptions. And of course the huge investment in getting a new edit suite to handle the new format.

Is it still too early or not? Thanks very much!

Looks like it is 7 Lux - like most Sony consumer grade camcorders.

Ouch!! That's almost unusable at a darker wedding reception. My old TRV 900 which was 4 lux was border line. With shuttering down to 1/30 it was doable but the picture didn't look that great.

Any reports on the LUX on the new JVC HDV camera?

Thank you.

I see it like this; Sony's cameras do 1080, JVC's new camera does 720, both are different ratios. There is still no definitive and true delivery method and everything has to be downconverted and this and that. If a client wants true HD, rent the proper cameras, an edit suite, and deliver the content. With the way things are now, I personally think you should use your 150's as long as you can until something is determined with a standardization on both formats for recording as well as (dvd) delivery. Until then, a lot of people are making promises of reconverting a HDV tape to a HD-DVD in the near future with no grounds that this will be parallel to what is presently available.

In addition, if you want to do HDV, why get the consumer cameras; it's a few steps backwards. If you have the 150 and utilize the professional settings and XLR audio, get the Z1U's; but I'd still wait. Don't forget, too, that it's the cameras, new lenses, new mics (in some cases), new editing systems, new hdv-compatible deck, new ntsc/hd monitor, and much more. Unless your market is asking for it and putting you behind others or you feel you need to learn it now, why change what is working at the present time?

If you need a camera now, get a 170; it's a step up from the 150 and is tried and true with solid performance. Some will disagree, but what's stated is quite true. :)

Re: [glimmer] New Sony A1U HDV camera [In reply to] Can't Post

Glimmer... thanks very much. Very elequently put and I completely agree, but I guess have been in denial in some ways!! I see my competition in my area moving to HDV and so there is always that thought of trying to keep up. I also need a new TV for my studio and what the heck does one get these days, other than a 16x9 screen. So there is another issue. SD or HD??? I just don't know!! Might just get a good old used 4x3 Sony from the paper and wait a few more years.

Thanks again for the great response. I may just get the 170's and keep on trucking.

If you wanted to switch to 16x9, then either the XL2 or perhaps one of the HDV might suit you, but I think we're still a year or two from a DVD delivery and some sort of market commonality. I own eight 170's and while it'd be great to offer what others are doing, the fact of the matter is that the delivery method might be more verbal promises than tangible products.
