New recording format: AVCHD Can't Post

Looks like now we know what the successor to HDV will be, and what Panasonic will use for those who can't afford P2 memory:

Not interested. There have been too many problems with the existing consumer dvd cameras for me to trust the dvd system on an expensive camera. Plus I am still smarting from my desktop dvd recorder dying when I had a rush job. All I want is something simple and robust.

Too bad this thing only stores 20 minutes of HD footage per disc.

Why do you think this will replace HDV?

I've never thought a camcorder recording to a DVD was a good idea, though it may appeal to consumers.

I'm not sure how this particular announcement will affect HDV, but some people seem pretty confident that H.264 encoding will be the next big thing. I'm a little surprised this solution uses DVDs instead of flash memory, but I suppose capacity would be part of the issue. If nothing else, it's interesting that this will put disc-based recording into both the low and high ends of Sony's HD camera line, so where does that leave the middle?

"Pro HD" It's still HDV, just with 24p and a couple of other variable frame rates built in to the codec.

I remember when music CDs had major compatability problems, so, so, so long ago.

But then, my first car was rockin' cause it had a killer sounding 8-track tape deck in it!

According to what I've read it's only 10 minutes of HD at full quality per disc, at least until they get a blue-laser version going. So contrary to what I said at the start of this thread I don't think this development will pose much challenge to HDV initially, even though some people are convinced it's the next big thing. Plus even if this done pan out it will probably take a couple of years or so to get all the kinks worked out for effective AVCHD production, so again this is not an immediate replacement for HDV.

It's funny how people bash HDV because it's so heavily compressed, but now they're all excited about AVCHD because it's more heavily compressed. Huh?
