How much would it cost to get that much storage in flash cards? That depends what kind of flash cards you're talking about. P2 cards are currently about $1125 each for 8GB or $22,500 for 160GB, while fast CompactFlash memory cards with the same capacity run about $150 each or $3000 for 160GB. Compare that to $2299 for an entry-level Cineporter with 160GB capacity and it appears that good off-the-shelf flash memory will be cost-effective soon compared to other high-bandwidth recording options. Extrapolate drops in standard flash memory prices over the next few years and it won't be long before 160GB of good generic flash cards cards costs under $500, at which point an HD camera using such memory would be reasonable to use for most purposes. One possible implementation of this could be an AVCHD camera recording to affordable flash memory at bit rates up to 25 Mbps or so, for which an hour of recording might eventually cost as little as DV tape. That's not the case today, but it could happen by the time most customers have an easy way to play HD footage at home.
