Playing HDV camera on an HDTV Can't Post

My HDTV is "HD Ready", which I think means that I need to have an HD tuner to play HD material. Such as a special cable TV box.

When I hook up my Sony HC1 camera directly to my HDTV via component cable, am I seeing HD? Or do I need an intermediate tuner? I assume my camera is acting as the HD tuner because the picture looks fantastic but I started to wonder.

The lack of an HD tuner shouldn't affect the ability to play high-definition material from a source like an HDV camera, and you should be able to tell by looking at the image quality. If you can, try plugging the camera into the TV using a standard-definition A/V to RCA cable and the RCA inputs on the TV, then switch back to the component HD connection. If you don't see a BIG difference something's not right somewhere.

By the way, lack of an HD tuner in an HDTV shouldn't be a big deal for most folks, who can simply rent the tuner for a few bucks a month as part of an HD delivery package from either cable or satellite TV companies. Otherwise you shouldn't need the tuner unless you're trying to pull an HD signal over the airwaves using an antenna.

hooking up your HC1 to your HDTV via component cables IS HDTV.
