Question for HDV 'users' only Can't Post

Now getting to the stage of gaining quotes for the gear...my question revolves around the "Tape Stock" issue. Do you guys use the 'HDV tape' or get by with the Normal dv tape...I understand the whole GOP thing so the idea of drop out during important moments is significant.......real world experiences only please

thanks

Paul,
I have been using the Digital Master (PHDVM63) and have not experienced any dropouts. However, at around $16 a piece ($21 at B&H), they are pretty pricey for wedding shoots. I have chatted with others on different forums and most are using standard Sony Premium mini-DV tapes and have not experienced any drop outs. Noone I have talked to are re-using tapes. I will be shooting my weddings using the Sony Premium tapes. I just cant see spending $170 on tapes for a wedding shoot.

I've only shot about five tapes/hours so far in HDV and have just used the Sony Premium. So far no drop outs.

Hey Shane,
interesting..........do you use just the one cam or do you have a backup. As far as the cost of stock goes..well its even more expensive here in Australia. The idea of dropout during a ring exchange is a bit scary..although cutaways are an option I guess....mayby a HDR 'piggybacked'?

BTW deckwise how does the quality hold up when transposed to component out...had any experience with this?.....

Paul,
I used the FX1 and the Z1. According to B&H tech, take it for what it is worth, it is ok to switch between tapes as long as they remain one brand, in my case, Sony.

"And by the end of the year, I should be able to capture straight to disk anyway. "

Firestore just announced that they're now shipping their HDV-capable FS-4 capture drive.
