SOny Z1U and PLAYING PAL for CONVERSION? Can't Post

Has anyone tried outputting a PAL MiniDV tape from their Sony HVR Z1U? The camera will play the PAL tape perfectly in on it's monitor, but when I output it to my edit system it will only come in black and white and not of full quality. I have an Edius system and have tried both PAL and NTSC settings with same results. Then I tried running the signal through a Sony Monitor that plays PAL, and into the system with no change. THen I even tried running the signal through my old Panasonic AG-W1 World conversion unit with PAL, n_pal and NTSC. Always the same results of black and white on my Edit system and color on the camera.

Perhaps I am trying to do something that just isn't possible?

Hi Tony,

I'm assuming you went into the menu and switched the camera from NTSC to PAL? It reboots afterwards and should behave like any PAL camera. If you did this, it sounds to me like your cam might have a problem. Don't forget to switch back to NTSC afterwards!

Hi Niels,
THANK YOU for your response. Duh -- switching the camera to PAL did the trick. I feel like the person who calls a computer tech support only to find out it's been unplugged at the wall. Blush

Hi Neils,
I was just looking at your website, very nice indeed, you are from England, well i am from England to, but have been living in the States for almost 4 years, i live in Bismarck North Dakota, i was living in Huntingdon Cambridgeshire before i moved over here with my wife who is from North Dakota, Iwas wondering if the wedding videography business is that big in England ? My wife is the one who has been in this business for 18 years. Thanks once again.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your kind words. Originally my wife and I are from Belgium, hence the references to my accent you might have seen in other posts. Wedding videography in England is mainly populated by part-timers. There are a few full-time people, but not that many. Everafter is Sylvia's full-time job, I used to have another full-time, but have recently changed to a part-time and spend the rest of my working week in her business, we hope that I can become full-time in her company within the next year or so. The market seems to be growing, but (as seems to be happening in US as well) there are many not charging enough, or outputting things so bad that they should never have been charged for in the first place. I guess the average video (excluding people that don't have one) costs about £700-800.

Hi Neils, you seem to have the same problem there as well then with the hobbiest's who just undercut the artists in the industry which make it tough on the people who deserve more out of there work, We have couple of people here who are willing to work all day shooting then go back and edit for $300-400 and one that charges $800 they are just making it tough as we are in a state that watches its pennies, we are in a position that we do not rely just on weddings,we also do the old 8mm 16mm film transfers for the local outlets,we also do the usual instructional videos, last year we was in the Kildeer mountains doing a Bobcat trapping video, then we are in the process of a couple of promotional videos for Pheasant hunt lodges,we only take on 9-10 weddings per year.It is a shame that there are people out there that thinking picking up a camera and pointing is all it takes to film a wedding,it is the work in the edit bay that can make or break a wedding do you agree? the amount of times people that come into the office wanting us to do transfer work for them of their wedding, they seem so excited when they bring it in,and i watch it being transfered to dvd and i think You are going to be so dissapointed,no tripods being used,no mics the list goes on and on,people just need educating.Isuppose the end of the day you only get what you pay for.the time they find that out it is to late.

I agree. Although a good shoot goes a long way, the edit is key. You do get what you pay for and most people find this out too late. Hey well, their loss! Anyway sounds like you've got some other interesting work lined up as well.
