SWEET! My first "BluRay" DVD with Vegas 8a Can't Post

So for giggles, I installed Vegas 8a and used the tools > Make BluRay from the timeline option and burned a 1 minute trailer to a REGULAR DVD! I only did the 8 Mbps option @1080. Took it to Circuit City today and it played in a Sony S300 BD player! It looked like crap because it was only 8 Mbps, but I'm going to do one later with a higher bitrate and calculate how much footage I can get on a regular DVD...

It IS the BRD format because my PC wouldn't even recognize the disc from the DVD Drive...

Thought I'd share this little success!

Re: [Ron Priest] SWEET! My first "BluRay" DVD with Vegas 8a [In reply to] Can't Post

I just made my first full Blu-ray disc yesterday using Adobe CS3, which has the added benefit of menu authoring support. It took about five hours for CS3 to transcode my output files from Edius to MPEG2-HD format and build the disc image file, plus another hour or so to burn a Blu-ray disc with 15 GB content at 2X speed. I expected the burn time to be less than that so I'm not sure what happened there.

Anyway, Blu-ray is here now and ready to go as a fully functional HD delivery solution, something I haven't seen yet with any other option. Burners are available for under $500 and you can buy the CS3 upgrade for $299 if you have any previous relevant Adobe product (e.g. buy an old copy of Premiere on eBay). Blank Blu-ray discs are still expensive at $12 and up each, so you'll want at least one rewriteable BD-RE disc. It's still early to be doing all this with a limited number of customers having Blu-ray players, but the Playstation 3 for $399 is a good deal for clients who want HD quality video.

Which burner did you use Kevin? I have to deliver two HD projects in blu-ray fairly soon and need to make a decision about the best current burner to purchase.

If you have Vegas 8 you do not need a blu ray burner to burn a blu ray disc. I burned a blu ray disc straight from the vegas timeline to a regular dvd with my regular burner and it played in three out of four blu ray players I tried it in! I even put chapter points in and those worked fine to. I tried a sony, two samsungs and a panasonic. The panasonic was the player that didn't play the disc. You can also burn HD DVD onto a regular disc from pinnacle studio 11 that plays in both the toshiba players on the market. Its a cheap alternative right now to be able to offer both formats the biggest downfall is space. On single layer disc you can get around 30 mins on an HD DVD and 1 hour on a dual layer disc. For blu ray from vegas at the highest setting it appears as though you can get around 38 minutes on a single layer disc and I have not tested a dual layer disc. Hope this helps.......

That's interesting. I don't use Vegas, so I'll have to check to see if the same capability exists with Encore.

I think I'll still need a blu-ray burner for wedding videos, though.

Just curious since you sent the files to Encore from Edius. What format were the files in. I have been archiving some projects for HD delivery at somepoint. I have been writing the final projects back to an m2t file and saving to tape and also to an external HD from easier import later. What format of file out of Edius were you using in Encore CS3?

I have someone that may want a BluRay disc now even though it isn't the standard yet. I could always get the files to someone with a burner and have them create them.

I ended up using the Edius HQ format to minimize transcoding losses in Encore, but M2T files should also work. I'd like to find M2T encoding settings which Encore won't insist on re-encoding, but so far I haven't succeeded.

I guess when it is time I could convert to HQ and use Encore to create the DVD files. I have a copy of CS3 but don't use it for much. I suppose I could create the Encore BluRay DVD image and just send that to someone to burn. What would you charge me if I mailed you an external HD with the DVD files on it and you just burned it for me? Just curious.

I've worked out a deal with someone locally to do that for $75, with him providing a blank BD-R disc. I have one BD-RE I use for testing purposes first, then do the BD-R.

I should probably check locally and see if anyone is doing BRay burning. Add on shipping of a HD and the price could get pretty big. I will keep it in mind though if the customer starts squeezing me to get a disc made up. Wink

Congrats Kevin,

We have been producing Blu-ray for over 1 1/2 years now with Ulead BD and a Sony Vaio system with Edius 4.0pro. Great to see some new faces in the authoring of Blu-ray material. Our M2T files drop right in Ulead and transcode without any problems. The next big step is helping the client understand they need to change to 720p or 1080i in their display features on their Blu-ray player; they come factor set to 480i. There are some units that also require updates to play BD-R/ RW material other wise known as firmware updates. The new LG dual player is the only one right now that does not have an update and will not play our BD-R/RW I sent the unit back. Good job sprend the word.
