Sony HVR-Z1U Iris Problem Can't Post

I don't know if this is a problem with the camera or what, but here is the situation...

I manual set the white balance...it holds Smile
I manual set the gain...it holds Smile
I manual set the iris...it doesn't hold Frown...When I shoot towards a window, and I WANT the window to "blow out," it doesn't. It adjusts, makes everything around the window dark, and makes the window "non-blown out." How can I fix this? Any suggestions...

I don't have a Z1, but it sounds like you also need to set the shutter speed ...

Yep, If you dont put shutter and iris in manual then then the auto will offset the manual setting.

Re: [scotthayes] Sony HVR-Z1U Iris Problem [In reply to] Can't Post

I have another issue with the iris in the Z1. When I have the iris opened all the way to 1.6 and go to zoom, as I zoom the iris starts to close. At full zoom it won't let me open it past 2.8 until I zoom out again. The only solution to this is to not stop it down past 2.8 and use gain. I've never encountered this with any other camera and have scoured the manual trying to find an over ride. Anybody have a solution to this?

If I understand what you're saying, all cameras do this. They are less light sensitive at the zoom end of the lens.

That is how the camera works it will always clamp down to 2.8. the only work around is the back light button. You have hit on the one thing this camera doesn't offer, true manual iris.

I understand a camera will be less sensitive the more you zoom, but that doesn't explain why the f-stop changes. And honestly, I've been shooting off and on for 20+ years and have never encountered this. To be fair, I've never done as much low light stuff as I'm doing now so even if the cameras I was using did this I never would have had them opened all the in the first place. And most of the cameras I was using were shoulder mount ENG style with a true manual iris. I can live with it.

Previous Sony handycams have worked this way, too. If you ask for the iris to be fully open, the camera will automatically adjust as you zoom, because "fully open" means two different f/stop values, depending on the zoom setting.

The FX-1 works the same way.
