Sony Z1 Audio Quality? Can't Post

Crazy How is the audio quality on the Sony Z1? We get great audio from our DSR300/390 cameras and poor quality from our PD150/170s. I'm wondering how the Z1's audio quality is since we may be using the same MiniDV tape stock. Should we look into a stand-alone audio recorder?

Thanks,

Thanks,

The sound quality on the Z1 is alright, about the same as the PD170.
The problem is that HDV audio is very compressed like MP3 audio is. So it is recommended to use a stand alone recorder if needed.

Honestly, if you ask me, the audio on the Z1 is fine for just a wedding video. Coorporate work is another story.

It also depends on your current audio workflow.
I prefer off camera audio and sync in post.
I record to audio recorders and send the same wireless signal to my camera for backup (sync audio). That is the way I have always worked though.

What are you using as your field recorder?

Thanks.

I use Edirol R09 and a Zoom H4 (when balanced XLR's are needed, like for a recital shoot).

Later on in the year I will be adding a 4 track Edirol R4 or R4 Pro recorder, and use that primarilly for line and mic feeds directly to hard disk.

Do a search, if you need information on the R09, H4, or R4, as myself and Mark Foley have written lots of feedback and usage for these units.
