On the PC, if you want flexibility, I don't see how it gets better than Vegas with a little bit of GearShift on the side.

I'm using Canopus Edius Pro 3 and like it, but what would be best depends on your needs and personal preferences. You really should download the demo versions of various programs and try them for yourself.

I use the VASST Gearshift app to create the proxy video to edit then shift back to the original video for rendering.

On the PC, Sony Vegas and Canopus Edius rule. Premiere had a good thing going, and then blew it for HDV in PP2.0, IMO. Avid has a great solution, but it's slow starting, and printing back to HDV tape is a major PITA.
Vegas with CineForm, Canopus with NX are both good. NX isn't nearly the quality that CineForm is, and it's slower. CineForm is a wavelet-based codec, and is *currently* the most efficient system out there.

If you're on a G5, Final Cut Pro HD

If you're on a budget, try Final Cut Express HD

Thanks for that overview ... why did you say Premiere "blew it" for HDV?

They did away with the Cineform codec as an integral part of their HDV workflow. Native HDV is a silly thing to edit on any platform, IMO. The GOP format creates issues for color correction, recompression, etc.

PowerMac G5 and Final Cut suite. Works great right out of the box. Bump it up to at least 2Gigs of RAM. I'd do 4Gigs for HD editing.

Can FCP edit both SD and HDV on the same timeline? My understanding was that in its initial form, FCP couldn't do this, have they changed that? Or is there a workaround?

that would appear to be a significant limitation during this crossover period.

In a Mac G5, I really don't think you can find a more stable and flexible editing software than Final Cut Pro Studio. Check out www.kenstone.net for tons of FCP support and articles. All free.

No. Gearshift substitutes DV files for the HDV clips, then shifts back to the HDV material for the final render. Sort of a software version of the old offline/online style of editing.

Cineform is an "intermediate" codec. It's high resolution, like HDV, but not interframe compressed, like MPEG2. This results in much larger file sizes, but less strain on the CPU. Final video is rendered directly from the Cineform clips.

Doug, you're offering HDV for 2006, right? Are you using Cineform? And does that
work like, once you are done editing in the Cineform intermediate, you convert
back to full res?

I'm getting there; don't rush me! Wink

Re: [Brackish] Wht is the Best HDV Editing Sofware? [In reply to] Can't Post

with my Avid Xpresspro HD I can edit dv, dvcam, hdv, dvcpro (25,50), SD and HDcam, dvcproHD tape or P2... natively via firewire and in 480, 720, 1080, 30I, 24p...you pretty much name it...and I can put them all in the same timeline...I can offline capture and edit at 15:1 (to save drive space)and then come back and do an online by just re-capturing the video at the desired res. I can be PC or Mac...I can edit in the field on my laptop and then go home and dump it into my desktop. I can take my 15:1 offline from my laptop to a bigger Avid like Adrenaline, composer, symphony... at a post house and transfer my project for finishing or transfer to film...whatever....With a mojo, I can capture analog 1:1 and get real-time effects. Just my opinion...

Re: [tgacga] Wht is the Best HDV Editing Sofware? [In reply to] Can't Post

This thread has gotten way off the mark. First the best software to edit HDV is hands down FCP, because it dose it native, until Premiere or Vegas can do that with out crashing a dozen time than That's all is needed to be said "native editing".
FCP can edit anything in any type of time line. set up a DV time lime and import HDV footage, FCP will squeeze it to fit perfect in the 720 timeline, it's not render free but it is realtime play back.
I think if your stuck using a PC than you can't go wrong with Express PRO. But if you can get to a Mac, FCP has more bells and whistles and costs a lot less then Express PRO and you wouldn't be stuck buying all the crap AVID makes you buy to get the software to work at top speed.

Re: [ourweddingvideo] Wht is the Best HDV Editing Sofware? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this is a pretty much an impossible question to answer. All of the major NLE's can edit HDV and do so very well at this point. Some go the native route, others use additional steps such as Cineform. There are also arguments for and against native editing vs using an intermediate (such as Cineform). The better question to ask is which has the feature set you are looking for. So regardless if you choose FCP, Xpress, Vegas, Avid Liquid (my NLE of choice), Edius or any of the others, just make sure that the NLE does what you want it to be able to do.

I will add that for the most part just about any reply you may get (including this one) will have some degree of bias. Vegas users will swear by Vegas, Mac users will swear by FCP, Avid users Avid and so on. Do some research, ask users, if possible visit a retailer to see the applications first hand and weigh all the points together to make the best decision.

You just had to do a little flaming, huh.
If your going to go that route of best value than iLife kills you all. For 79 bucks and you have HDV editing, DVD authoring, music beds, photo montages plus you can crate your own website and post your little wedding video for all to see and set up a blog to flam all the PC users.
But if you really want power and professional features then FCP studio for 1200 offers unparalleled features, performance, style and price.
