Z1 vs. DVX100 Lux Rating Can't Post

Hey Z1 users,
Can someone please verify that the lux rating of the Z1 is 2 lux? I know the DVX100's we are currently using are 3 lux. We always use on camera lighting for the reception so that isn't going to be a problem with new HDV cameras. I just want to make sure that what I'm reading online regarding the low light sensitivity of the Z1 is correct. We are getting ready to make the jump and although the Canon line of cameras looks enticing, specifically the A1, we've had Canon's before and both ended up with dead pixels within 2 years. I also want to be able to use the same batteries the camera uses for the on camera light as well. Any input you guys (and gals) can share is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Chuck Moore

A while back I did side by side comparisons of several cameras in dim light and found the FX1/Z1U to be pretty close to the DVX100 in practical terms, but maybe not quite as sensitive. (So call it 2 lux for the DVX and 3 for the Z1U.) If you're used to using a light at the reception you should be fine with the Z1U, which many people are using successfully at weddings. Note that with the Z1 you can run gain to at least 12db with acceptable results, plus enhancing in post can bring out detail which looks lost in the raw footage. The people who seem to most question the low-light of the Z1 are PD170 owners, and for them there's now the EX1 as an HD alternative.

Hey Ron,
I'm not Kathy but I'll reply. Wink We actually ended up getting 2 Z7's through glimmer's Sony connection. We have our first shoot this weekend (a local scholarship pageant) and we went to the dress rehearsal tonight with our cameras. We both shot between 15 and 20 minutes of test footage and I just got a chance to look at it. I hooked up the camera to one of our 20" LG flat panels via HDMI and I have to say that I'm very impressed. I also thought the camera held up very well regarding the auto focus (I know some have said it's not very reliable). Of course, the limited amount of video we got tonight is no real test to how the camera will really perform over time. But, the auto focus did a really good job simply based on what little we shot. The girls in the pageant actually walk out onto a peice of the stage that protrudes neary 20 feet (like a runway) and I always shoot that from the side. Our DVX100's always struggled staying focused on them as they walked out and then returned to the stage. There's a doorway that's partially lit in the background as well and the Z7 didn't seem to waver one time. The house lights are pretty much completely off but the stage has lights and a spotlight is on all the time. The footage I've looked at is really good, with the blacks being rich (no signs of grain when using the Zebra to adjust the iris) and the color reproduction appears to be stunning. Our Pannys never could reproduce a true purple but one of the dresses a contestant was wearing was purple and the Sony did an outstanding job with it. We haven't ordered CF cards yet, as our current editing systems don't support them. But we will be getting the new S4000 units from Macrosystem soon and they will provide much needed features that everyone has come to expect in a video editing systems including the use of external hard drives, including the USB card readers. I feel that's really when the benefits of this camera will pay off, especially for Same Day Edits.
Anyway, if tonight is any sign of things to come with the Z7, then we'll have a long and happy relationship. Smile
