HDV still has legs, and will for a while. The stories of the Interframe vs intraframe formats are effectively bogus. There has been an AVC I announcement from Panasonic, and they're expected to announce a camera featuring the format at NAB. It's additionally expected that they'll announce a professional camera licensing the format from Panasonic, but I'll bet that doesn't happen. AVCHD will be the new "DV," of this there is no doubt. But it's very early. There currently isn't a single editing solution for AVCHD. Canopus has announced a transcoder to their HQ format, expected to be shipping next month. Sony has announced Vegas will support AVCHD in the "Spring 07." Adobe has announced a "future upgrade" for AVCHD, and while Ulead is expected to come with a product... Additionally, AVCHD isn't sweet on your computer either, requiring roughly four times the horsepower of HDV. That'll change as CPU's get faster and editing conversions come available. CineForm is expected to announce an AVCHD solution soon as well, similar to what they did with HDV. So...I suppose the answer depends on your timeline. AVCHD is about 18 months out from being easy and fast. HDV is here now. Sony and Canon both have great new HDV cams, and JVC is expected to announce something new at NAB in the HDV lineup. Grass Valley has just gone through their FIFTH marketing guy for Infinity, so not expecting anything new there, except that their likely going to have some lower-cost cams soon.
