iMac G5 & HDV Can't Post

I just bought one of the new 20 inchers so I can finally start doing Hi Def SDEs and have a couple questions that I cannot seeem to find answers for.

- Will a single 2.1 GHZ G5 chip transcode HDV to AIC on the fly?
- How hard are they to upgrade the RAM and HD space?

"Will a single 2.1 GHZ G5 chip transcode HDV to AIC on the fly?"
Why would you want to use AIC if your editing with FCP you do not need it. But the answer is sort of on the fly. Once you captured using AIC the Mac will have to convert the clip to AIC and depending on the length, will depend on how fast that conversion is.

"How hard are they to upgrade the RAM and HD space?"
I think once you open the back you will find the answer to that.

The reason I ask is because I import footage with iMovie and I am not about to attempt to do same day edits in native HDV and my powerbook only transcodes at 25% real time in iMovie.

My G5 tower of course transcodes in real time..but those are dualie processors and I am not lugging tha taround with me.

You asked about a G5 not a PowerBook. But you should have no problem with capture and edit on a BP in native HDV it would be a heck of lot faster than waiting for AIC to convert the HDV footage, not to mention a better quality capture.
System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 (500MHz or faster) or G5 processor; HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors
512MB of physical RAM; HD features require 1GB of RAM or more (2GB recommended)

Re: [ourweddingvideo] iMac G5 & HDV [In reply to] Can't Post

I did ask about the G5 and only mentioned the PB as a reference point for importing HDV.

Let me explain again, this is for a same day edit, there is no way I am going to deal with editing native HDV for this type of edit. That is the reason I am needing to transcode to AIC. There may be a little more time on the front end, but it will save me having to reconform in the back end as I run the presentation off the tape.
