playback HDV on computer? Can't Post
A real basic question...

I have a demo DVD from Sony. When I insert it, Power DVD starts up and the disk plays. At the start, it advises me to open the file "start.hta" if I want to see the disk in HD; otherwise, it will play in SD.

Windows doesn't recognize the .hta file extension.

What is this file, and what application do I need in order to play the HD content on the disk?

fully-fledged HTML Applications (HTA) powered by JavaScript. this is what I found when doing a google search.

Oooh, it looks like it's more than that, Pam.

I did a little searching myself, and scripts with the .hta file extension completely subvert all your security controls, allowing the program to run any ActiveX controls and Java routines it wants.

It's a big security threat if you get an .hta file in your email. I wonder if Sony's putting one on their HDV demo bears any relation to the recent attempt by their Entertainment division to control any computer that runs their content?

Now I'm not so sure I WANT to view the HD content of this flamin' disk! Unsure

Well, I don't KNOW that this particular .hta file is a threat. But my hackles went up when I found what .hta files can do, if they have a mind to (or more precisely, if their originator has a mind to).

If you can use your file manager to explore the files on the disk, see if you can find the HD video file and then just play it directly using the VLC media player (or Windows Media Player):

If/when you want to distribute HD content on a DVD, it's easy to do it by rendering to either WMV or H.264 and saving to disc with a standard video extension like WMV or MOV. Pretty soon we should start seeing more DVD auhtoring apps supporting more formal HD DVD production.

Yep.

I did manage to get the HDV video files to play, just by selecting the file itself in the Windows Explorer. Looks beeyootiful!
