Sure, but why would you not record a back up to tape. DDRs are great but they fail just as tape dose. That's why they allow you to record tape at the same time.

i'm wondering about the time used to transfer to the computer...If I could record to a drive during the filming so I didn't have to transfer in real time to the computer. that would be swell.

Right, that's the beauty, but what happens if the cable fails or the hard drive writes a bad code, that's where the tape back up is needed. This is the problem with the new Panny HVX200 there is no way to back up a HD recording via tape

can you record to the tape, and to an external HD at the same time?

how do you connect a HD to the camera to record to it?

Usually it goes out through firewire to the unit. You can't just hook a hard drive up, they make little "add-on" units (like a firestore) that take care of that for you. A little spendy, but if you do enough work it would save a lot of time. I can't afford one right now, though.

I use Nnovia drives. The 100G holds about 7-1/2 hours of footage and works either sync to tape or continuous record. The conversion time saved is slightly based on your system speed, however:

For every one hour of tape filmed is one hour of capturing and you can't touch the computer.

For every one hour of film record to the hard drive unit is about 6-7 minutes of transferring the files and you can touch the computer.

Expensive? Yes. Worth it? I don't even use tapes anymore.

And to the post regarding the drive failing, sure it's possible, but your camera could fail or the tape could break. It's the trust that we place within a Company's quality of a product.

FWIW, the Nnovia for HDV should be shipping soon/shortly. Going into Beta cycle from what I just was told. For anyone who bought an Nnovia system in the past 3 months, I think they're doing a free upgrade.
