time to hold off on hdv? Can't Post

Headlines of my latest copy of TBV Europe is that the standards agency, the EBU, has done a volte-face and is now pushing p over i. Don't think Sony will be too happy. I don't think I will be spending any more money on a hdv workflow now until they stop all this 2 track madness - hd-dvd vs bluray, 720 vs 1080, i vs p Mad

Unfotunately, if recent track records speak for themselves, then we will be in limbo for quite a while.
Just look to the recent DVD-R vs. DVD+R fiasco, that until recently caused nightmares for use just to encode. they finally started maufacturing players and recorders that could read and burn both formats.
But it took a while, and I see the same thing brew'n for Bluray vs. hd-dvd. Now eneter optical disc technology,a nd things could get even muddier in the next few years.

It's not difficult to render from 1080i HDV to 720p output, so I'd say no big worry from this announcement. As far as HD delivery is concerned, that's a little uglier but both types of players support the same video formats, so again not really that big a deal. What's troublesome is whether we'll see consumers adopt any readily accessible HD delivery method en masse any time soon, and right now that doesn't seem all that likely. So we're mostly stuck making widescreen SD DVDs for the near future, until HD delivery finally gels with customers.
