I know of people that got the bose noise cancelling headphones for it. I guess the idea is: "how can you tell if you have clipping or distortion on your input if you have all of the outside noise as well?"

I bought some good sony headphones years ago because I was in an apartment and liked my electric guitar....but the neighbors didn't. They were good enough that they transitioned over.

I guess it just depends on how close you want to track your sound.

The Sony 7509s are an "industry standard" for field audio monitoring.

However, I find that I get better results with a set of active noise-cancelling headphones. Mine are Kenwood, but Bose and others also make excellent products. The advantage is that you can be pretty sure that what you are hearing is what your mic is picking up, not what's coming in through the sides of the cans. The disadvantage is that you can't hear your partner shouting at you from three feet away.

Mostly banqeuts,
I almost always put the sound on auto, I was concerned in an event when the speaker started using a different mic in the room and my sound level showed on like -16 db or so and i could not hear anything in the headphone.
when i checked the footage on screen to my surprise it sounded pretty good.

what do u guys think of the mdr-v600? by sony>?
used i can get it on ebay for about $45 brand new $69 shipped.

I use a pair of Sony MDR-7506 ($99) to monitor my Z1 audio so I don’t think a $75 pair of headphones is overkill. They are half the price of the 7509’s and do a good job. If you want to hear what you’re recording, don’t skimp on the headphones.
