17" Macbook Pro availability? Can't Post

Is the 17" MBP available offline (ie Mac stores, CompUSA, etc)? I think I'm going to pick it up, download bootcamp, and install XP for a dual boot machine. Best of both worlds... Angelic

I think so Glen, I know the bookstore where I work has them in the store so I can't imagine other apple dealers wouldn't.

Actually, I changed my mind. I just looked on Comp USA's site and it says that the Mt. Laurel store has a limited supply, but they are not available for in store pick up. I'd give em a call to find out the skinny:

Thanks Bill. That is indeed the CompUSA I shop at too- I'll have to drop them a line.

Heads up, Glen...

Check the Apple support site before you pull the trigger - I recall seeing something about a problem with BootCamp where XP wanted to own the machine, that getting it to dual boot was a problem at least for a few.

1- NEVER EVER NEVER EVER give CompUSA your money if you're a Mac user! For a list of reasons, contact me off board, CompUSA is NOT to be trusted to give out correct Mac infor nor to do compentant Mac repairs. Many Mac users have been ripped of by them.

2- BootCamp runs fine if you do it right. There are a small tiny few who have problems, but usually it's user error on the installation.

It's kind of hard to find competant people ANYWHERE you go. I was at the local Apple Store and I knew more about Macs (ironicly enough) than the girl helping me. Then I asked two other employees if the Mac Book Pro was two 512 meg sticks or one 1 gig stick. They fumbled around on the desktop under "About this Mac" and still didn't have a solid answer. Of course now I know it's one 1 gig stick but the apparent difficulty in such a base level question didn't give me confidence in them.

They tried to offer me to schedule to bring in my laptop (regarding it's slight misaligned lid) to be adjusted by one of the Mac Geniuses. I think I'll pass.

I find this true as well. But I'll say I have worked in such a retail environment before selling hardware and camping supplies. Because so much time is spent dealing with customers, stocking shelves, etc, it leaves very little time to learn all the products that make it into our stores, as a result, most of the employees are not as knowledgeable as their customers.

Mac Genius' are supposed to be Apple's answer to that very problem, and on a whole, they do possess more product knowledge than other store staff.
