Apple ProRes 422 HQ Can't Post

Anyone using ProRes rather than HDV to edit?
I like the benefits of full 1920x1080, 4:2:2 color space, non-GOP editing, better compression for titling...

If so - what is your workflow?
Do you capture directly to the codec?
What storage are you using?
How are you archiving?

Curious to know.

Best,

Whit

Hi Ron!

Agreed, I think my good friend, "Silence", best answered the questionWink

I have a vague memory that Julie Hill mentioned using this codec in her encouragement to the Mayor to go the "Apple" way.

Perhaps I will email her directly or track her down in Orlando.

Ciao for now.

Re: [Whitwell] Apple ProRes 422 HQ [In reply to] Can't Post

There is no benefit to using proress over HDV unless you are doing brutal color or compositing work. You can find a number of reviews that detail why... basically proress was created for people shooting 10 bit uncompressed so they could edit on laptops. Not for people editing HDV. All you are doing by converting HDV to proress is wasting hard drive space and render time as Proress is actually slower to render than HDV. Yes, I have tested it...

That being said, there is a
place in your sequence setting under the "render control" tab where you can select the "codec" as either "same as sequence" or "Apple Proress". It is beneficial to select "apple proress" here for your renders as it offers a better rendering of your filters and transitions.

Cheers,
Scott

I am actually logging in my first ProRes project as I write this. I will let you know how it flows (the project, that is) as I go along.

Re: [Whitwell] Apple ProRes 422 HQ [In reply to] Can't Post

even if you capture prores you will not get the full benefit of the color space, mainly because HDV is not acquired at 4:2:2. the other stuff is much better though. I mainly use DVCPRO HD, and the few times I have taken HDV sources, they were immediately transcoded to DVCPRO HD. Everything is stored on a cal-digit 2.5 TB RAID array, and backed up on media drives as well during the edit.

Julie did mention this in hert presentation. I think she finds it easier to work with and more stable.

No, I made it locally and uploaded it there because the attachment feature on VU seems to be broken
