"Boot Camp" user reports? Can't Post

Anyone here using Boot Camp to run Windows on a Mac? I'm seriously considering buying a MacBook Pro* and giving Boot Camp a try, but would appreciate any insight first from folks who have actually done this. Thanks.

* Yes, really. It's getting hard to deny that this might be a useful way to go...

Windows runs fantastic on an Intel Mac with BootCamp.

There are some glitches though. My gf runs XP almost exclusively on her iMac (via Boot Camp) and I get to hear all the complaining about the issues she encounters.

There is one particularly annoying one that I've seen happen in person many time. When you boot into your windows partition it auto-defaults to the highest screen brightness. There is a monitor brightness slider in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen. Every so often when you grab the little handle to drag and adjust the brightness the system instantly reboots. No warning- just goes BLACk....and reboots.

Another one we see alot is the keyboard getting lost. You'll be working on something then "DING DONG" the tell-tale windows device disconnect sound...and no more keyboard. You have to unplug and re-plug it in to get it working again.

There's a few other abnormalities but I don't know all of them to list them all out.

If your getting Mac hardware to run XP exclusively or semi-exclusively I'd say go with PC hardware. If you want a Mac with the "ability" to boot into Windows occasionally I think Apple hardware and boot camp is a good choice. I just don't recommend it if your getting it to replace your PC hardware and remain soley on XP.

For what it's worth, I found reports on the internet of trackpad glitches in Windows on the Macbook Pros and had someone in the Canopus forums confirm this. I'd agree with Glen's assessment that if you need reliable Windows performance for critical applications then running Windows on a Mac may not be the best choice at this time, but some Mac owners seem to be happy with how well Boot Camp works. As I've previously reported, after taking a look at the MBPs and thinking about what I need most for my video production purposes at this time, I decided to pass on Macs again and bought a Dell Latitude D820. I wish it had the backlit keyboard in the MBP, but other than that it's great.

I'd encourage anyone who's successfully running Windows on a Mac to keep us posted on how that's going, so others can make informed decisions about that option.

FWIW

I have been running XP via bootcamp on my MBP for 8 months and it works really well. I have had a few glitches here and there but no more so than the glitches that just happen in any PC. What I don't recommend is the idea of Bootcamp for a cross-platform workflow. I find that having two(or more *grin*) separate workstations makes for a much more productive situation. I think the greatest benefit to bootcamp is those who want a lifeline to ease into the Apple world.
