Can FCP 5 make a project template? Can't Post

Hello and thank you in advance,

I'll first tell you what I used to do then you'll know what I want to do again.

Back in the Premiere 6.5 days I could *create* for lack of a better word, templates from the timeline.
Can't remember the *action* name in Premiere but after exporting the project, and saving it in it's own folder, I could then delete all of the raw footage from that client from my computer. This particular *premiere action* would keep only the footage I used in that particular project with all of the filters, fades etc. attached.

Then I would use that project as a template for that particular song.

Is there an *action* in FCP 5.1 that can replicate what I used to have in Premiere?

Thanks again!

you can either just export the file or use the media manager to do this. I believe that the media manager is explained very well in the APTS book "Final cut pro 5" or "Optimizing your Final Cut Pro System" I have never used it otherwise i would try to explain it, but this is where i would look for the best instruction. I buy the "Apple Pro Training" book for every app I can. it is absolutely the best way to learn the program without actually sitting down with a certified professional. Both books are highly recommended reads.

edit: I promise I am not trying to be a read the manual type of guy, but I really think these 2 books could help you a lot! Also you might want to try checking out the 2-pop.com forums for everything final cut. Many of the code developers for FCP hang out on those forums, and might know of another trick to help ya! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Thank you Timothy.

I remember Ben Balser saying to not use the media manager because it is flawed? I dont' know as I've never used it.....I will look more into that.

Thanks again!

it understand that the interface has some issues, but I had never heard that it did the wrong thing. I know it is a major bone of contention amongst many FCP editors, but i also understand that there were some improvements in FCP version 6. I have it on my laptop now and am doing some projects there before I upgrade on the Mac Pro.....that and I am waiting on final approval from a client that has really drug their feet.

Hi Terry,

I've been using the media manager in FCP 5 with no issues. Where it comes in handy for me is after a wedding day edit. I capture roughly 10gb of footage to put it together but use the media manager to export a new project file along with only the media I used plus 1 second handles. It cuts it down to roughly the size of a self-contained exported movie but I have the advantage of being able to go back into the project when I edit the whole program rather than just having an unalterable movie. I hope that makes sense. So media manager does work. I even use if for photo montages. Just open the timeline you want to 'media manage', have it active and uses the media manager tool in the file menu. Uncheck 'Include master clips outside selection' and check 'delete unused media from duplicated items'. Check both the settings in the Project box and name the new project file. Its very fast.

As far as using a project file as a template any project file can be reused. The media will go offline, but that's not a problem. You can copy the content from new shots into the template framework by using the copy and paste attributes > contents command. The only thing that makes this a wonky way to reuse a shot layout is slow motion settings. What I normally do is this - after I've edited to a song I place markers on the music track I delete the media but leave the other elements like titles that can be reused. This way you don't have to reinvent the wheel to figure out the pacing and the title placement fits with the timing of the song, if you have titles. I don't know if that is what you're going for, but just know that any project you've worked on can be opened, saved as a new project, and reworked with new media...

Thank you Joel!

That's exactly what I don't want to do, reinvent the wheel.

I'm going to give that a try when I get home.
I'm in Atlanta right now.....tonight is the 4Ever groups Iron Videographer comptetion!!!

Its not that it doesn't do what its supposed to - I just never use the same speed usually. I take a clip and adjust it to fit the music and its all over the board from 5% to to maybe 66% at the fastest. If the source clips are the same size it will work, but that virtually never going to be the case.
