Can I Purchase Apple Care Protection Plan Elsewhere Can't Post

My 90 Apple Care support will expire here soon and I was wondering if I can purchase that elsewhere other than direct from Apple? Apple wants $249 but I thought I've seen other places where you can purchase it cheeper. Is this accurate? If so, where would you recommend?

I understand I have up to a year to purchase that 3 year extension, however my 90 day complementary phone support ends in, well 90 days from purchase. I didn't quite understand how this worked so I called Apple to ask for clarification. The guy explained that I can buy the additional 2 years of support anytime within the first year after purchase. So I asked, what If I wait until after 6 months to purchase the Apple care extension, and lets say my computer craps out in 4 months. Since I've passed my 90 days of complementary support I was wondering then if Apple would charge me for online tech support when the problem is the hardware. He told me yes. That's doesn't make much sense to me. Apple will cover parts for up to a year (without the extended support) but it will cost me $50 a call to tell them I have a problem with it???? Does that make sense to anyone?

Hey Ron,

I don't typically recommend extended warranties for anything... except AppleCare. It is a great price for the piece of mind.

The only way to get it cheaper is to get it via student discount or purchasing through Amazon. Be sure that is the one you need from amazon before purchasing.

BTW.. if you purchased an Apple Display when you purchased the computer AppleCare covers that as well.

Okay, thanks Brian. I had found some web site claiming I could purchase the Apple Care Protections Plan from for about $50 cheeper that what Apple sells it for, I was kind of leery about that one. I guess I have about 30 days left to purchase it, and since I live 44 miles from the closest service center, I'm just within the 50 mile radius for on-site repair service, so I suspect It would be a good idea to purchase it.

find a college student, pay them 20 bucks to buy it for you.....they get it 120 bucks cheaper than you can with the business discount.....You could also try buying off a college professor, but that might not work. The student discount is a pretty cool thing over at apple....almost makes me wish I was still in college....The business discount isnt too bad either, especially if your state has a deal like Texas where filmmakers and productions houses do not have to pay sales tax on their equipment and blank media. The business discount by the way is 5%....

Apple care for students is way discounted though.....much past the standard 10% just FYI

To be perfectly honest (or actually not) they are really lax about checking for student id to confirm your status. This was told to me by a friend that works for Apple (which still does not make it right, just cheap).

Ron,

I have bought Applecare from a vendor on Ebay for a pretty significant discount and they are totally legit. Le me know if you want the information. For example, I purchase MBP Applecare that normally retails for $349 for $175.

Ditto that. An isight on a MacBook Pro stopped working just before my one year limit for for buying Applecare was reached so I got it. It was only $189 on eBay compared to $349 at the Apple Store.

There's a vendor here in Philly that offers a free loaner computer whenever your AppleCare covered machine needs service, but only if you purchased the AppleCare from them when you bought your computer. It's the same price as buying from the Apple Store.

How does that work? Do you install your copy of FCP on it?

i know that but wasnt going to mention that. Nor was I going to mention the one time I got both my student discount (when I was a student) plus no sales tax because it was being used for production in Texas......

Normally I have a student of some kind doing contract labor for me, so thats how I do most of my student purchases etc.

Nice!

I pray every year that my friend doesn't use his employee discount because then I get it. 25% on hardware and 50% on software.

I got the upgrade to FCP2 for $250.

Yea Ron, Tim is right, the academic pricing is just ridiculously cheap. Here is a link to the price list I use when buying software. Sometimes as much as 70% off!

So how does that work? If I have a student or a professor purchase it for me, I don't have to register the software as a student?

Re: [Ron Priest] Can I Purchase Apple Care Protection Plan Elsewhere [In reply to] Can't Post

nope....it has no clue at all. its the exact same part number for a student as it is for the retail outlet....the only things they track as student is software like FCP aperture etc. That I recommend paying the higher price. it is worth it in the long run when it comes time to upgrade.
