Can Not Disable Screensaver Can't Post

Using System 10.3.9.
Recently I discovered my screensaver is running when my computer is idle for a while.
I don't like screensavers to begin with, and am very concerned what might happen if the screensaver were to start while encoding a dvd.

In System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver are set to Never. In Energy Manager all settings are never.

In System Preferences> Accounts> Startup Items the only application is Apple System Events. I haven't removed it from startup items because I don't know what it does or doesn't do.

I've also done a file search for any application containing the word "CRON". Nothing this time. Last year I had a similar situation where a back-up application used a time-based mini-application called "Cron", which was over riding screen saver settings.

I've repaird permissions with Disk Utility.

I suspect I've picked up a spy type application.

Any ideas on how to identify my problem and remove it?

Check your Screen Saver settings for "hot spots" being set. I have all the same settings you do (I'm currently on 10.4.2, but have done this since Jaguar) and have a hot spot set for one corner so I can still get the screen saver up when I want it...

Also, check your Exposé settings since there is a screen saver capability used there. If nothing else, you could re-install.

BTW, "cron" is a category of Unix task, so don't start eliminating all crons. There are several you should be running routinely if you don't leave your system running 24/7.

What you might want to do is launch Activity Monitor and watch All Tasks to determine which application is invoking the screen saver. This is tedious, but informative.

Re: [Waldemar] Can Not Disable Screensaver [In reply to] Can't Post

While wandering through the posts here I discovered I never did report the resolution to my problem. I simply ran both "Cache Out" and "MacJanitor" clean up applications, I had forgotten to run them weekly as I normally do.
Had I not done this, the strongest advice from both Mac discussions pages as well a my local Mac technican was to reinstall my computer's original OS (10.2) and rebuild everything!
