Can we discuss work flow please? Can't Post

Many of you are quite aware of the problems I had after shooting my first job using a High Def camera. In this case I shot in DV SP mode (both on tape as well as CF card), but in 16:9 mode.

I've read where many ... if not the majority ... shoot in HD, edit in HD and output to DVD in SD.

Can anyone explain the steps involved (including settings) when doing this?

I have my first wedding coming up at the end of the month and will be shooting with the Z7 and FX1.

More than likely I will be shooting in 1080i60.

I think I realize that I'll have to use the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 to capture and set my sequence for the same. What I don't know is what's going to follow that ... exporting (I've learned to hate that word, lately) to Compressor, etc.

In other words ... where is the change made from HD to SD?

Thanks -

If you are using FCP 5.0 or later you do not need to transcode to the AIC, FCP will handle HDV natively. If you are using FCP 6.0 or later, there are reasons to transcode to ProRes, but that has been discussed extensively elsewhere.

So, the basic workflow is:

Capture HDV
Edit HDV
Export:Quicktime Movie (Current Settings, Audio & Video, DVDSP Markers)
Drag the resulting QT .mov file into the batch window of Compressor.
Drag the most appropriate DVD preset folder onto the batch widow (say DVD: Best Quality 90 mins).
Change the destinations of the m2v & ac3 files to a location of your choosing.
Click Submit.

Of course, there are lots of tweaks that can be done to the various encoding parameters (ie. turn off frame controls if you want the encoding to finish while you are still young).

Chuck ... thank you for your response. I just upgraded to version 6.

You had me till you got to QT. Damn ... QT has been a thorn in my side for the last week. I suppose I'll eventually get over it. Crazy

So when you go into Compressor ... THAT'S when it goes from HD to SD? If so, that's good to know because I obviously didn't have a clue. I guess I can go directly from the timeline to Compressor.

Did not know that about frame controls.

I'm going to have to bookmark this thread since it'll be a few weeks before I have to use it.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Scott

Please do a search.. My workflow is detailed in more than one thread on this board.

Cheers,
Scott

Yes. Export an HDV .mov file from your timeline using File:Export:Quicktime Movie. Then take that file into Compressor and have your way with it. Wink

I would suggest you avoid the "Send to Compressor" workflow. It is very slow.

Good Luck, Scott.
