Can't export to tape. Can't Post

I have an hours worth of footage in iMovie that I can successfully burn on to DVD but for some reason it just cannot bring itself to export to tape.
I have tried several attempts and the best i can get is the begining title freeze framed and the audio sounds like a tape getting chewed. It does the same on the computer except for the audio of course whilst exporting, so i know it's not a camera issue.
I have since tried exporting other movies with no problem.
The only difference i can think of is this is a re-saved project under a different name and i think i may have dumped the original, does that mean that this was only an alias?
If so why can i still burn a DVD from it and why did the re-save take up just as much space as the original .i.e each movie is about thirty gig.
Surely if it was an alias it would have been a few megabytes.
Is there anything i can do like "dump my preferences" i have heard of this but not quite sure what to do and don't want to make more damage.
thanks for your help in advance.

What is your system environment? I mean type/model of Mac (as much detail as you know), version of iMovie you're using, and other related applications.

It may be that you are attempting to export MPEG-2 to tape. This would be burnable but not writeable to tape.

We basically need a lot more info.

If your attempted export freezes so quickly I would suspect a contamination of some sort within the video project. Try an export to QuickTime Movie to your desktop. import into iMovie or FC express or pro (if you have either one). in any case, problems should be detected.

If all of your efforts seem to consistently place you in the "Alice-In-Wonderland-nothing-makes-sense" computer multi-dimensional-la-la, then there is the long shot chance your computer is trying to implement something it shouldn't. Try OSX version of zapping pram. It resets some user behaviors and, in some incomprehsenhible way, makes things right.

Restart your computer.

When you hear the start-up chime, Press <Command-Option-P-R> ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Then, hold these keys depressed until you the start-up chime THREE times, then release.

It is rather like the shotgun blast of anti-biotics western physicians prescribe when they know you are ill but aren't interested in doing the investigation needed to find the single microbial culprit. The blast of anti-biotics kills everything in its path and returns body functions back to normal.

Like I said, it is a long shot. It is also painless. Noting important gets compromised. At least, it hasen't happened to me so far.

Re: [Lydian] Can't export to tape. [In reply to] Can't Post

First, Waldemar's suggestion is a good general fix-it for erratic system behavior. About the only "negative" thing it does (as I recall) is reset the default system font - hardly a big deal.

I don't use iLife much and I don't use iMovie at all, but my wife does from time to time at her school, so this isn't exacting advice.

If I were walking up to your system, I'd probably start by using searchlight to locate all files with the same name as your movie, then start loading them to QT to determine their specs using Show Movie Info from the Window tab of the menu bar. Once you know what you've got, diagnosis will be easier. One thing you may find is that the MPEG-2 version of the movie is stored inside the iDVD app (unless you knew this and moved it.)

As far as an Alias goes, if you deleted the source material that the Alias referenced it should have a question mark as part of the icon to indicate that it lost its source. It shouldn't have any info whatsoever to work with.

I just tried what you describe in iMovie5. Of course, it worked fine... My guess is that the file you're working with is damaged or in the wrong format. I guess that puts us back at Spotlight...

Wish I had more for you.

Well done Waldemar,

Funny how that little trick of zapping the pram works.
Thank you very much!!!

Thanks ratvega for chipping in as well.
