Hi Ron,

Thanks for the idea. It's an excellent solution. I'll try and do it on this current project and see how it comes out.

One sticky point, what if you have a cross dissolve?

--A problem I do have with this process in general - (sending my sequence to be colored in a separate application) is that I can't change my clips once they come back. I know that color can-should be the last step in editing but as the editor, colorist, audio'ist' Smile ... I find that after a color change or effect, it will change the feel of the sequence and sometimes I want to extend or change a scene, but as far as I know, after it comes back, you can't change the clip.

Well, maybe I need to rethink my workflow and be totally done when I start to color correct. It's just that sometimes the great stuff comes out when I think I'm done and try something in a slightly different way. Anyway, just a thought.

Good morning Jenny

Yes, a change in workflow might be warranted. It would probably be best to save any effects and transitions until after you color correct the sequence. Now In a normal workflow, where your weren't exporting a multiclip out and then importing it back to the sequence and splicing it up into separate clips again as I have suggested, you could add your cross dissolves before color, as color will accept those transitions, it just wont display them inside of color. They will however carry over when brought back into FCP.

As far as changing your clip once they come back to FCP from color, well if your talking about adjusting the CC well you can. According to the steps in the Lynda.com lessons you simply go back into the color project, select the clip that you want to make a change to inside of color, render it and then export the sequence back into your FCP project again. It will give you another entire sequence but only the clip you changed will be different. Now keep in mind I haven't done all of this myself, it's just what I learned going through the lessons. Do you have access to the lessons, if so I'll find the specific movie for reference.

I guess this is where a program like Looks can come in handy, as all of your color grading is done inside FCP.
But the downside to Looks is that you can't preview your changes in an external monitor until after you leave the Looks interface.

On the whole, I like the idea of working with Looks for color grading still over color as you stay in the application.

As for worrying about crossfades, I wouldn't. As all you are trying to do in Color is correct and grade your footage. When you send your sequence back to FCP, the transitions will be in place, and can still be tweaked or replaced as needed. All that I am looking for Color to do is grade and correct my footage, that's it. All of my editing is done in FCP.

This is why it's best to do your color work after yoiur edit is finished, as there are no changes to be made.
For me this is hard, as I always have a tendency to color correct as I am editing. Whihc probably slows me down some n my edit.

Michael

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

Re: [Ron Priest] Color Rocks (Glen take it for a Ride!) [In reply to] Can't Post

Morning Ron,

I haven't done the lynda.com training in a while because it's one more thing to keep me from editing.

I learned Color from Walter Bascardi, the DVD. I think he had 9 lessons and got me up and running. I do use color when we do a web video (although I'm no expert), it just isn't feasible with weddings -- for now.

I have a short mulitlclip wedding that I'm going to try it with using the suggestion I gave you on exporting and then reimporting it and splicing it back up. I'll let you know how goes.

Hi Michael

Looks is not a color correcting tool though correct? I'm thinking about purchasing looks also (I've downloaded the demo) but I think I'm going to look closer at Color and see if I can accomplish all the looks I need with color for now. Then I can spend that $400 toward a 52" LCD for the living-room. Or... I'm thinking about a 48" LCD to edit on.... thinking hard about that one. Laugh
