Compressor 2 Still To Slow? Can't Post

I did the FCP cross grade and now have Compressor 2.3. First time I've used Compressor in a couple of years.

I compressed a 60 minute program at the following settings:

Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 4:3
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
File Extension: m2v
Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
Video Encoder
Format: M2V
Width and Height: Automatic
Pixel aspect ratio: default
Crop: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls: Automatic
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Field dominance: Auto detect
Average data rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
2 Pass VBR enabled
Maximum data rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
High quality
Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled

It's taken 6 hours on a 1.33 PB G4 with 1 GB DDR SDRAM. Is that about right?

It took 5 hours via Quicktime Pro, but i did a fresh install of OSX and now don't have the export in MPEG-2 option in QTPro.

Any thoughts? Is Compressor still not the best app to use?

Hi Brian

The only thing I can think of is your computer is too slow. I can render an hour and 20 minuted video in about an hour or so. I am usin.g the intel mac with 4 gigs of memory. Also do not use AIFF files, as they are huge and take up more time to encode.

You're using a G4 so yes it will be painfully slow. Compressor is dependent on the speed of your processors. I run it at home on a dual 2.5 G5 and the performance is much better then what you are reporting. At the office I'm using a quad core 3GHZ Mac pro and compressor screams.

Thanks Bill,

The G4 PB has been good for me and I don't have a lot of weddings to produce each year so it hasn't been a pain. Just wondering if it was the app or something else.

Although, QT Pro would compress at a faster speed but now I don't seem to have that option any longer.

I think with the release FCP 4.5 and Compressor Apple removed the ability to export to MPEG2 from quicktime. They want you to do it in Compressor. I usually set up and run Compressor overnight while I'm not doing anything but sleeping.

Hi Brian,

Frame Controls: Automatic

Try setting Frame Controls to 'Off'. That should speed everything up. Also, are you using any filters during the Compressor export? Watermarks, gamma etc?

It looks like because of the fresh install you lost your ability to export MPEG2 directly from QT. Details here:
