Compressor takes for ever Can't Post

Hi guy's,

These days, when ever I'm compressing a 1-2 hour wedding video in compressor it is taking at least 5 plus hours to finish.

Mostly I cant wait that long so I just let DVD Studio do the encoding and it does it in quarter of the time.

Any one know why this maybe happening. The compression rates in compressor and Final cut are very similar.

Mark, give us some more specific information. What machine you are using, what version of the software you are using, your workflow from FCP to Compressor, what version of software are you using.

Thanks Bill,

I am using a Power Mac G5 Quad 2,5GHz with 5.5G SDRAM.
Im operating on Leopard and using the lastest FC2.

I am first saving project as a quicktime movie (Not Self contained), then using that file in Compressor.

mark that sounds like a pretty typical time for the best quality render out of compressor on a G5. MY G5 Dual 2.5 would typically take 9-12 hours per hour of content to render in the 3 pas codec. THeres a heck of a difference on DVD between the 2 as well. Most likely DVDSP is doing a 1 pass render and that is why it does not take as much time. You might try using compressor in the fast setting to do your finals if you are concerned about time. Normally I would start a render and go home for the day.....

Wow, a 3 pass codec? I didn't there was one!! and you say there is significant difference even between 2 and 3 pass?

I guess I just need to be patient and let it go over night or something.

Mark,

I agree with Tim. I have a dual 2.5 G5 and with a two hour movie it takes compressor about 5 hours to encode a MPEG2 with a 2 pass VBR. If your movie is only an hour and you are in a time pinch then you can get away with a 1 pass CBR encode but I wouldn't try anything but the 2 pass VBR encode on longer projects.

Try disabling Frame Controls. It defaults to Automatic. You can find that setting in Compressor > Window > Show Inspector > Frame Controls [tab] > Frame Controls > Off

See if that doesn't cut down your time. FWIW on a Core Duo 2.16ghz MacBook Pro a 90 minute SD mpeg2 encode with a few filters checked in the Compressor's filter tab takes about 3 hours

Yes, Frame Controls is the culprit. Absolutely turn off frame contraols.
