Compressor transitions issues anyone? Can't Post

I am running 10.4.4 with FCP 5.0.4 and compressor 2.0.1. I just recently updated from software update my OS and FCP from 10.4.3 and 5.0.3 and I am noticing that now compressor is having a lot of trouble with transitions. The plain video looks fine, but as soon as a dissolve starts, it gets all pixelated. Anyone running into that? Unsure

Compressor 2.0 + sucks period, apple has yet to correct many problems with it.

Many are using QT conversion instead - it's faster, better looking, smaller file sizes.

2-pass compression is broken in Compressor 2. Use a one-pass preset, or QTPro or another app.

It's a but in the 2-Pass High Quality presets. Apple is fixing it now. For now, what I do, I open a 2-Pass HQ preset, and tweak it. I never use presets as is, anyway. If you tweak the preset (limit your bit rate to 6, etc), it should be fine.

You can also open a 1-pass preset, and tweak it to be a 2-pass high quality and it will work.

Or just use 1-pass preset as is.

Big time. I went back to Compressor 1.2.1. Solid now and much faster than ver. 2. I'd miss having access to the advanced features (filters, watermarking, GOP adjustments) in Compressor too much if I just used QT Pro.. Make sure you don't use any presets from ver 2 if you do reinstall ver 1.2.

Virus software running, not enough RAM, Energy Manager turned on, Firewall turned on, using System drive as scratch disk, etc.

None of those should affect the transition encoding quality. Those are settings that can affect the dreaded 'can't submit batch' problem, but this pixelation is a completely different animal. I've used the data rate display on a standalone recorder to see if the data rate spikes abnormally during the bad transitions. It does go up, as it should, but not any differently, i.e. faster or higher, than Compressor 1.2.1, neither of which are any where near a number that would choke a DVD player.

Is there still a problem with Compressor? I'm editing a small project in FCP now and will need to use it for output. Shocked

I haven't heard of a fix yet Glen. I've avoided Compressor 2 for the very reason you mention, the transitions look like crap. What I do is export as a QT Movie and then use Quicktime to create my .mv2 file. Images look great to me and takes half the time of Compressor. You'll need QT Pro at $29 or $39 (some say it's included in studio but i couldn't find it).

Compressor is one of the rare occasions that Apple has dropped the ball.

There may be a work around but I haven't had the time to research it.

Compressor is not the problem. You can get the same output quality from Compressor like that of QT output by using the CBR 1-pass/Good compression setting. It's only when you use VBR 2-pass mode that artifacts will occur. The problem lies in Apple's MPEG-2 encoder, not necessarily with Compressor.

I think the QT and Compressor updates have largely fixed this issue. I haven't had any artifacts the last few times I have encoded in VBR 2-pass in Compressor.

Well I had artifacts when encoding with the VBR 2-pass so I don't see a fix. I'm still using Panther so I don't know if that makes a dif. I'll try the CBR 1-pass next time but only benifit now to using Compressor 2 rather than QT is the batch feature.

I get lousy compression as well and I am using the latest updates on OS and cmpressor. I wish I could go back to version 1 but for some reason it's not readable on my FCP 4.5 disk anymore. Bummer.
