Well, now that I've given it some more thought, I've decided that I'm not going to purchase the cross platform upgrade for the Mac, and I'm certainly not going to upgrade it for the PC. Out of all the programs that come with the CS3 Studio for the Mac, I have to be honest and say that I would probably only utilize Photoshop CS3. Here is the list of additional programs which come with the bundle: After Effects CS3 Professional, Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, Photoshop CS3 Extended, Flash CS3 Professional, Illustrator CS3, Soundbooth CS3, and Encore CS3. Sounds like a good deal for a $799 doesn't it? But not really, not considering it would cost me another $799 next month when Adobe came out with CS4 and I would once again be forced to upgrade the entire suite of stuff I don't use in the first place. I've always wanted to learn After Effects, however I just can't think what I'd use it for. I don't do a lot of corporate stuff, weddings mainly, so what do I need AE for? I mean, the animated titles produced from AE are pretty cool, but I think Final Cut Studio can probably handle all my needs in that area. Most of the other stuff I've seen wedding videographers use AE for look pretty cheesy in my opinion, animated stick people and funky 3d photo montages sure are dated. I know some utilize AE to produce the standard Ken Burns effect montages, but I've always used Premiere Pro to do those and I don't see any reason why I can do them in Final Cut Pro. So, I really can't justify the time and expense associated with After Effects. If I want to play around with it, I can just keep it on my PC and utilize it there for the time being and transfer files between the PC and Mac as needed. I was also thinking I would like to learn Flash but I'm not sure what for? After getting a taste of Final Cut Pro, I'm certainly not going back to Premiere, therefore PPro would just be taking up valuable system hard drive space on my Mac. I don't know what I would use Illustrator for, I've don't have a real need for anything concerning vector graphics. I haven't needed them on the PC, and I doubt I'll need to work with them on the Mac. Although I've really come to love Encore, it's probably just puppy love since it is my first DVD authoring program. I'm sure the new DVD Studio Pro in Final Cut Studio will be more than sufficient for my needs, I just need to learn how to use it. As far as Soundbooth goes, is there really anything it can do that Apple Soundtrack Pro can't do? I doubt it. Besides it's Adobe's first version, so I'm sure it's got it's problems. (Adobe is good for never fixing their existing problems with existing software, they just move on up to the next version leaving their customers holding the box, reading the label and asking "Why did I upgrade to this? Heck, I owned Audition since version 1.5 and never did learn to use it much with the exception of converting some songs from WAV to MP3. Evidently I didn't miss much because even Adobe didn't stick with Audition very long before they dropped it for Soundbooth. Oh well, at least they didn't simply add a couple new tool bar icons and call it an upgrade. So, I've said all of that to say this. Photoshop is really the only program out of the entire bundle that I would probably have a real need for, or use very often anyway. So It really doesn't make much sense to pay $800.00 for the whole bundle of programs I wouldn't use in the first place. It's probably smarter to just bite the bullet now and purchase the full version of Photoshop for the Mac as a stand alone product, and when it came time to upgrade, I could do so for a fraction of the cost versus having to once upgrade an entire bundle of unused software. You can't just upgrade one program out of the bundle, you have to upgrade the whole bundle. So, I'll just keep my old outdated Adobe CS2 stuff along with aging Matrox X100 card and let it die peacefully with the PC. That way, I can still dabble with AE and have a backup for editing video on PPro should the need arise (heaven forbid... knock on wood). I've got no complaints with Photoshop CS2 on my PC as far as that goes, it completely serves my purpose. So in reality, I can probably wait until the next release of Photoshop CS4 for the Mac and switch platforms for Photoshop at that time. Sorry for the rant, but sometimes I can just think things out better if I write them down. Besides, who knows, my thoughts just might help someone else that may be trying to make the same decisions Im having to make. Oh P.S. I'll have to thank Lisa Ivey for playing the devils advocate here and helping me realize, I'm on the dark side now, things don't have to be as complicated anymore. ___________________ Ron - Live Chat - Studio Cam - Blog 4EVER GROUP AFFILIATE How to Adopt the 4Ever Logo
