DVD Burning software Can't Post

I have a 2002 G4. No DVD Burner. I bought a Phantom Drive DVD Burner, but it did not come with any software.

Any suggestions for the best software?

I edit in IMOVIE or FINAL CUT PRO.

Thanks!

The best is DVD Studio Pro presuming your Mac meets its minimum specs. Also, I strongly recommend Roxio Toast 7. You won't need anything more than those two and you could get by with just Toast if your need for customizing DVD menus is minimal.

Since your system didn't come with a burner, the iLife software didn't include iDVD. You might want to check out its compatibility with your burner, since the latest version of iLife has some very nice stuff.

After that, there's DVD Studio Pro, currently in version 4. This is one of the finest authoring suites out there for less then you paid for your car... However, it's a bit spendy, requires some training, and frankly goes places that many users don't want to go in terms of flexibility (AKA technical adjustments) and system requirements.

The venerable Toast is about the only non-Apple software worth mentioning. It is a general purpose burner utility, not an authoring system per se, but it's worth the price for just what it is.

I've heard that Toast is a good utility to use to burn DVDs once you're done with FCP. Have you had any experience with it? It is better than Compressor, or QT conversion?

As far as encoding goes, I've only used Compressor for the last few years. It's important to note that QT7 and Compressor2 use the same codecs, so it's really a matter of workflow and presets as to which you choose. The Apple codecs are well respected, even among those who also own Toast. About the only other encoder that gets any notice is Bitvice, which a number of users recommend.

I expect that using Toast to encode and burn DVDs works just fine, though quality is a potential issue. I'm not familiar with Toast 7, so no comment on their apparently limited menu design. This is an area where iDVD and DVD Studio Pro do very well. The best tool for authoring is without question DVD Studio Pro - but as mentioned above, it is spendy and although not difficult (for what it can do) it's certainly not a 'two button' (as in 'Load' and 'Burn') kind of system...

What Toast is very handy for (in addition to all its other utility) is burning multiple copies of a DVD, something that neither iDVD nor DVDSP support. Many users author in DVDSP and build a DVD image to hard disk, then turn the actual burning over to Toast.

I'm not aware of any serious problems with any of these products, so it really comes down to how high your standards (in terms of encoding, menu design, etc.) are and how much you're willing to spend to achieve them.
