DV (firewire) and Hard drive requirements Can't Post

I am interested in getting in to video editing with better equipment than I have (G3/266 with Iomega Buzz). DV or DV-8, possibly (Sony TR7000 for the input device) and motodv for the transfer medium. The question that I have is: What kind of hard drive performance do I need? I currently have the 4 gig internal of the G3 (ATA) and two external scsi's (3 gig each). My concern is what kind of through-put does one need to transfer via firewire from something like a dv or dv8 camcorder to my hard drive(s). Also, I have an older version of Premiere and Adobe After effects. Will these programs be able to edit the stuff coming over the fire wire.
Any help or info will be most appreciated.
