Desparately need help making DVD - SUCCESS Can't Post

First of all ... I recently upgraded my G5 to the latest version of FCP.

The version of iDVD on the G5 is 4.0.

iMac has the more recent version of iDVD, purchased in the summer of last year I think, and FC Express.

I shot two perfomances and need to get them delivered prior to school getting out for the year.

Now the rest ...

I'm about to shoot myself out of frustration and don't know what to do.

I shot a performance with the Z7 in DV SP mode 1080 60 ... 16:9. I shot it on the CF card as well as tape. Neither was shot in HD.

The transfer from card to computer was fine once Sony released their new update.

When I dropped the files into the sequence ... set on DV NTSC ... it asked me if I wanted to change the sequence settings to match the clip. I said yes. I edited without any problems and the footage looked fine.

Since I have zero experience with Studio Pro I thought I would make a QT file and take them to my iMac for a quick way to make a DVD in iDVD. That's where my first problem was.

I cannot find the correct setting in making a QT movie that gives me a 16:9 movie. The anamophhic setting provides a very small looking file that doesn't seem to work properly.

If I use current settings then it appears as a 4:3 file.

So ... I haven't been able to move my files to the iMac in a manner that gives me the proper sized file.

Problem #2 ) I decided to give Studio Pro a shot even though I don't know what the heck Im doing. I look up a tutorial for a basic DVD on youtube and follow the directions. I could make a DVD, but the problem is the settings of my QT movie. It's still a 4:3 movie.

I need this movie in widescreen format and can't get it done.

If you can provide any help on this board it would be greatly appreciated, but I need specific, exact settings.

If you think you could talk me through it and wouldn't mind me calling ... send me a PM with your number and best time to call.

Stress is starting to take it's toll.

Thank you.

Bruce

I've tried DV NTSC and my latest is DV NTSC 48 Anamorphic.

No matter how I try to export it always comes up as 720 by 480.

I spent some time on the phone with a friendly VU member and he was able to help me better understand DV Studio Pro ... but the DVD I burned still came up as 4:3 ... even though I had checked the 16:9 / pan & scan in two places.

I'm exhausted and frustrated.

And just for the heck of it ... I did hook up the camera to the HD TV and the footage looks pretty good, so it's nice to see if I can ever get there ... it might actually be worth it. Pirate

Hi Brian

I am not sure if I am using the correct HD settings, so not sure if I need help or not. Just sounds like a very cool idea with the Ichat and screen sharing. Sparky really needs the help I think.

Are any of us sure we are using the right settings? Unsure

I just did my second HD project (working on the third now) so I am not an expert by any means. I only have to offer what I am doing. There may be a better way.

BTW... we just bought an HHR for the business. We are liking it so far. Our MINI Cooper was just a little too small for all the gear we are now taking.

The version I have is 10.4.11 on a G5.

I have iChat, but haven't used it yet (probably more damn settings to go through). Pirate Plus ... it's on my iMac and FCP is on my G5.

It just sounds like I'm the only person on the planet that shoots in DV SP mode and edits in Final Cut. No one, on any forum, has said ... yeah ... that's how I shoot and these are the settings I use to edit and make a DVD.

Someone on another forum suggested that this is going to be 720 x 480 no matter what ... and that the video would be letterboxed for 4:3 and that those with widescreens would have to use the zoom feature to fill their sets.

The more I think about what I've been through over the last two days I'm beginning to believe them.

The high school seniors get out of school next week. I've always had their DVDs delivered to the school for pickup, but if I don't find a way to get these done I'm going to have to mail them out.

What I want in the future is for the client that has a widescreen set to be able to just watch it without adjusting their TV.

I'm really, really close to wishing I had my SD cams back so I could stop screwing around with it and actually start doing some work. Unsure

I'll be back in about 4 hours and I'm going to try something else, but not getting my hopes up.

One quick question...
DId you go into your DVD Studio Pro "Preferences" and then click on the "General" tab and change aspect settings to 16:9 in the dropdown menu?

This will effect menus, titles, slide shows, and even your video if its not changes to the correct aspect ratio, BEFORE you build the project.

I don't believe that I did it before, so I'll give that a shot as well.

My problem is that the clip in Final cut looks great in the canvas and viewer. It's 16:9. I played it back through a component setting on the HD tv ... looks really good. But for the life of me I can NOT get a qt file exported in 16:9.

I'm off to try the suggestion above.

Re: [Sparky] Desparately need help making DVD [In reply to] Can't Post

Well then it seems the problem is that you might have changed your FCP preferences when you added the clips to the timeline, making your project settings 4:3. I don't know why that would happen, but it might have.

So in FCP try a few things.
1. check to make sure that you project setting (Easy Setup) is indeed 16:9 widescreen
2. If the sequence is setup right but still doesn't work well , all of your sequences in FCP, then create a totally new sequence with Easy Setup and 16:9 Widescreen Anamorphic. Then import your Play Sequence in and next it in your timeline, if it mentions that your project settings have changed, would you like to change them to match "say no".

Then export your new widescreen sequence as a Quicktime "self contained" movie, and make sure that you keep your current settings for your render.
If you try to view your movie in QT, then it might show up as 4:3, but your file might very well be correct, as QT has trouble with 16:9 HD widescreen (it won't display it properly.) If you want to make sure that your video is correct then open up FCP and double click it to load it into the viewer. This will tell you if its right.

If all is well, then open Compressor, import your new QT file in the dock, select SD DVD widescreen for the appropriate time length and encode.
Then open up DVD Studio Pro and setup your project to be 16:9 widecreen in your General Settings tab in the DVDSP preferences, and create your menu and encode your disc as normal.

Here's a little bit more about what's been going on today.

I took the footage and exported the movie in QT as a 1080i60 movie. I then pulled that into Studio Pro. (I've never opened it till yesterday.) I checked letterbox/pan & scan, but that wasn't what I was looking for.

I redid the configurations in DVSP and chose the letterbox option only. This gave me what I was looking for on my 4:3 set.

I took the same DVD to my 16:9 set and ran it. I had to set the TV to the Full mode and it worked out pretty good. Also, Wide Zoom worked as well.

I "think" this might work, but have to do a bit more.

In the meantime I went back and checked camera settings. Keep in mind that I had the camera less than a week, played with it and thought I had a pretty good understanding of the basic settings. Here they are:
  • REC Format: DV
  • Scan Type: 60
  • DV Rec Mode: DV SP
  • DV Wide Rec: ON
  • Video Out: Component - 1080i / 480i ... Down Convert: squeeze ... DV Wide Convert: squeeze (have NO idea what that means)
  • iLink Set: HDV to DV Conv: off
  • Down Convert: squeeze
Now ... I'm going to go back and recapture some footage after applying some of the details you've mentioned above. However ... when I go to Easy Setup there is no 16:9 option.

For the format I use NTSC. Under "USE" what do I select?

Thanks for your help.

Ok ... now I'm making some progress, but I'm going to have to ask another question.

I basically started over. I set everything to DV NTSC Anamorphic. I captured a clip from tape. When I dropped it into the timeline it didn't say they didn't match (a first).

This is the part that confuses me ... when I export as a QT movie (DV NTSC Anamorphic) it still comes out as a 720x480 movie. I can change it within QT to 853x480, but importing it to DVSP, it's still 720x480.

Does this mean I just have to import the file as is and then choose letterbox?

Once you have imported the files into DVDSP and put the file onto a track, select the track from the outline tab (upper left). The information about the track will display in the inspector (lower right). Select "16:9 letterbox" from the display mode drop down.

Ok just so you know, I just did a test this morning using this tutorial:
http://digitalcommons.psu.edu/node/1975

I did a test without the tutorial this morning and got 4:3 video.
After the tutorial I got 16:9 video.
I imported video from my Canon HV20 and down converted to SD video on capture. The camera won't make a difference as long as your camera conversion is setup properly.
BTW I bring my video into Compressor (QT self contained from FCP) to render my video files, not DVDSP. IN compressor I simply bring in the QT video and select the DVD preset that I need and render. I just did a test with DVD files and a streaming video at full res, and teh aspect ratio was correct.

Hey Bruce,

We really like the HHR. We did not get the Panel Edition as our dog would have rebelled. She loves the fact that the rear windows go all the way down.

It is really a great vehicle for the business. Definitely not as fun to drive as the MINI but since we had $3500 in rewards saved up on our GM card it was a great deal.

Re: [MLiebergot] Desparately need help making DVD- update [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Michael ... that was an easy read ... and that's exactly how I did my last one ... sometime early this AM. Unsure

What I need to double check here ... when you made the qt file ... opened it up in qt ... did it open as a 720x480 or did it open in a 16:9 mode?

After spending most of the day and night burning coasters, I have come to the conclusion that I'm either missing an important step or QT is always going to open up as a 720x480 file.

Capturing the video exactly as you posted, the video came into FCP as a widescreen format, edited it in widescreen and all was fine. However, when I exported the movie as a DV Anamorphic QT, self contained file, opened it up in QT, it still comes up as 720x480.

The only way I can get this to look decent on both a 4:3 tv and 16:9 is to take the QT file, change the aspect ratio from 720x480 to 853x480 and resave the file.

Then I can take that into Studio Pro and make a DVD using the letterbox function. Pan & scan will not work at all as it's cutting out way too much information.

My vision is probably going down the toilet as I've been in front of the screen for the last four days trying to figure this out.

If someone can tell me exactly where I'm going wrong ... please speak up. Otherwise I'll convert the QT files to 853x480 and burn them.

And on the last note ... I would do this all in iDVD (since I have zero experience with Studio Pro), but from what I can tell, iDVD will do 16:9, but not letterbox. Instead on a 4:3 set it comes out pan & scan. PirateMadUnsure

eta: I'm not 100% sure that I'm not taking a quality hit from changing the aspect ratio, but again ... my peepers are pooped!

Don't trust QT, it won't display 16:9 properly. I don't know why, but it's a bug in QT.

Trust what you are seeing in FCP and what you see and convert in Compressor.

Yes ... on the track as well as the menu. When I burned a sample, the QT file was burned in letterbox ... but 4:3 ... not the 16:9 letterbox. It wasn't till I changed it to 853x480 that I could get the letterbox.

Then ... as if that weren't enough ... pulling the QT file into DVDSP ended up being to large.

Now I'm trying to learn compressor from on-line tutorials to see if that will help. In my first attempt I waited over an hour to get a file that DVDSP found to be incompatible.

Fun just never stops around here.

Re: [Sparky] Desparately need help making DVD- update [In reply to] Can't Post

FINALLY ...

I wasn't sure it was ever going to happen.

First of all ... big thanks to Whit!! With a couple of phone calls you gave me an initial understanding about Compressor, Studio Pro, and setting my preferences. I also looked up some on-line tutorials since I had never used either of them before.

Best advice I believe came from Michael ... forget about QuickTime. It was freakin' useless.

I also went back and re-read an old post from Glenn about exporting from the timeline to Compressor. I knew when I read it the first time I would eventually need it, so I bookmarked it.

Basically I was able to export directly from the timeline to Compressor, import into DVSP, set to 16:9 and then burn. Of course before I did that I had to learn how to make chapter menus in DVSP.

I burned my first DVD after all that and was so excited ... till I got 3/4 of the way through and the video started getting artifacts and blocking. I was hoping it had something to do with a fingerprint that I think was probably on there when I burned it. So I took another shot at it and it worked.

One of my next threads is going to be Work Flow ... from HD to DVD ... and how do YOU do it. But not tonight.

Thanks guys.
