Export to DV? Can't Post

Never been in the situation that I've had to do this before... BUT...

I have just completed a music video that will be played on television. Since I've never had ANYTHING on television yet, this is a learning experience. First, I know there will probably need to be some amount of broadcast safe filter put on it... any suggestions as to how to figure out what would be needed? And does this lose any quality of the finished result?

Then, I was also told that they don't accept DVD submissions for their show and that it needed to be put on DV to show. Do I need to put color bars before and after the video itself? And then my main question... how the heck do I get the final edited project from Final Cut Pro back on DV tape?? I have an FX1 and HC3. The project was completed in HD, will that HD quality be lost when sending it back to the camera? All stuff I've never had to worry about yet... so how the heck???....

Thanks in advance for your help!

Erica

Hi Erica,

Congratulations on getting your work onto TV. Getting your project onto DV is pretty straightforward but I'm not sure about the colour bars. I think I'd heard before that 30 seconds or so is about right.

Anyway first question about broadcast safe. The colour corrector filter in Final Cut Pro will show you if your clips are broadcast safe or not. It will indicate a green check mark on your clip to say that it is safe. If not, a yellow exclamation warning will be over your clip. You can then play with the colour corrector filter to adjust the unsafe parts. There is an auto-contrast adjust that will do it all for you very quickly but may not be perfect. (Not sure if this feature needs to be switched on or it is on by default). Joel had a great tutorial about colour correction very recently on this forum that shows the use of the filters (3-way).

As far as output, under the menus there is a print to video option. You set your in and out points first on your project, then select Print to video, select some more options (can have a countdown and other options) and print to video. If your camera is connected it will record it all for you. Now the question about loss of quality someone else can answer, but if its HD, you're sending out digitally again to a HD capture so you should be fine. Still, you said you needed DV , I only know about the miniDV SD stuff. Hopefully the gurus will be able to answer this better for you.

I know its only a wee bit of information but hopefully it gets you started. Good luck with your project.
Sean.
