FCP EMERGENCY.....PLEASE HELP!!!! Can't Post

My good buddy Bob is in Maui with a fcp problem. If anyone has any ideas, we would really appreciate it. Following is is desperate plea for help.

Laptop Won't Launch FCP4.....Hepl Please.
MCP 17" with 100 gig 7200 drive, 2 gig ram,
FCP project loaded in MBP and Macally 160 external firewire drive.
Initial editing went well. Shut down and when I went to save it, all eppeeared ok.
When going to final shutdown, fcp stated project was modifed....after saving it initially and asked if I wanted to save it....I said save.
Tried opening project one hour later, typical startup, then got message: Unable to locate following External device:
Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480).
Have tried disk untility and safe mode startup time after time.... Did software/firmware upgrade for all programs.
Still not able to launch fcp.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
Bob

Bruce,

Did you try trashing the preferences yet? Sometimes it helps, although I've never done it in the middle of a project. There is a tutorial here as to how its done. Can be dangerous to do, but if you're almost hosed already then maybe worth a try.

Does the external drive boot up OK? Did you try a different cable or a different firewire port. (Sorry, silly I know but I had to ask Crazy).

I think something similar happened with my colleagues MBP, although we were able to acknowledge the warning message "unable to locate following External device" and then go and reconnect all the media files. I think in his case the external drive hadn't booted up fully before FCP launched and it was unable to connect.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Let us know how it goes.
Sean.

Thanks Sean. Yes someone helped him trash preferences, which really scares him I think and that did the trick. Thanks for the reply.

Actually thanks to Dan Mc Mahon from Maui that helped him. Dan is a wealth of knowledge and a great guy. His wife Jean is also full of knowledge and help. Not sure if they monitor this forum or not, but thanks for the help Dan.
