FCP Studio Install question.... Can't Post

I started the install the other night but chose a "custom install" and only installed FCP and DVDSP by checking their checkboxes and leaving the others blank.

I went to finish the install today and it doesn't "recognize" that FCP and DVDSP are already installed (ie it automatically puts a check box next to them).

If I were to run the install and accidentally have one item checked that is already installed will it be smart enough to detect it and not install OVER TOP of it?

I ask because I went to finish the install today and it was taking too long (WOW it's slow!) and I had to exit the install early. It installs in a weird sequence so I'm not sure what is installed and what isn't.

When I originally went to install FCP and DVDSP the button to initiate the install said "Upgrade" rather than "Install"- why is this?

I think it's smart enough to recognize what's been installed. If you know FCP and DVDSP are installed, I'd just install everything else again. What takes so long are the soundtrack loops and live type media. Those combined take up something like 15gb.

Renny gave you the straight scoop on why it's slow and big... Soundtrack Pro and LiveType resource files are huge. I think I allow 45GB for a complete Studio install.

There are several possibilities. One is that the installer is a "combo" that can also install an upgrade. Apple usually gives different SNs for upgrades to aide/confuse these things. A second is that the installer detected an older version of the app and is prepared to short-cut the install. The third and most likely is that the programmers were paying more attention to the new app than the installer template they used... and overlooked the button name. Smile

Re: [RatVega] FCP Studio Install question.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok here's an update. It WAS smart enough to know what I installed and what I didn't. When I place the main FCP Studio disk in and it lists all the programs many were labled under the "size" column as 0 bytes, meaning they were already installed.

I finished the install and loaded DVDSP and noticed a very small amount of templates. iDVD had more. Curiously I placed the FCP Studio disk back in and low and behold there was a single item under the DVDSP drop down labled "DVDSP Contents" that still registered as 4 gigs. Everything else at this point registers as 0 bytes.

I ran the installer checking ONLY the box for the "DVDSP Contents" and the installer seemed to hang at 99% for quite a while before it finished and started the install of "DVDSP 3 Templates & Transitions". When it finished I loaded DVDSP and it STILL has the same amount of templates. I go BACK to check the Install disk and it's STILL registering as 4 gigs left to install under "DVDSP Content"! CrazyCrazyCrazy

Apparently it's not installing correctly? What's the next step- remove DVDSP and all of it's files (via Spotlight) and try re-installing it from scratch? Previously (before the FCP Studio install) I removed a bunch of programs and templats including iDVD, iMovie HD, iPhoto, and GarageBand. Will this affect the install in any way? For example, does DVDSP use the iDVD templates as well?

Yeah, I guess you might want to uninstall DVD Studio and try again. Try these instructions:

Maybe imovie does provide templates. Did you remove it just to free up space? I'd say if you really want to free up space, you might look at removing the livetype stuff. It's a fairly cheesy application.

Yes, LiveType could be removed, but "cheesy" isn't a very objective assessment. There have been recent threads by PC users on this and other sites about LiveType, asking if there's anything like it available for them. I agree that some of the animated fonts might have "limited application" (a euphemism for "useless") in weddings, but the application is very powerful and flexible. Maybe locating the animated font library (which is large) and maybe the Soundtrack Pro loop libraries (also large) on an external drive would be a better choice.

Oh I have plenty of uses for LiveType already in mind. Stay tuned. Cool

PS Does DVDSP only have static menus as templates. I was suprised to see iDVD have animated menu templates but not DVDSP.

DVDSP has some modestly animated templates (they need to be loaded into the menu window and played) , but nothing as elaborate as those in iDVD. This is probably because DVDSP can accept Motion projects directly, allowing you to create highly customized motion menus. And no, the two aren't compatible...

DVDSP is a real powerhouse after you get used to it, and has some huge advantages. There are always ways to get the look you want...

The guy at the Apple store said you can load iDVD templates into DVDSP. Is this true? If so it might be worth re-installing just to get some of those templates. Btw, Motion is AWESOME! wow

Yes, some iDVD templates can be used. Unfortunately, DVDSP4 doesn't support templates from iDVD 5 or 6...

Yes, Motion is awesome. Think about what you liked best and least about those iDVD templates, then go build the perfect version in Motion! That will put a small dent in Motion's vast capabilities. There's stuff there that even I haven't tried yet...

Yeah- one step at a time. Tongue I'm going to wrap my brain around FCP for a while with the aid of Total Training for FCP. Once I have a good grasp on the core program in the Studio Suite I'll move on to DVDSP and Motion. However just toying around with motion gave me plenty of ideas. AngelicAngelicAngelic

GmElliot, contact me off-board if you're still baffled.

RatVega, who the hell are you? You've mentioned in other posts you and I are friends, but I have no idea who you are! Screen names suck.

lol...at this point I still think Vegas whoops FCP's arse. I really like all of the programs in the suite and their integration/workflow with each other. Vegas doesn't have that (well at least on the visual end- it has integration with other audio apps). As a simple NLE vs NLE Vegas has way too many strengths for FCP to be tops in my preference.

Once I can learn how to work with the "need" for handles for transitions (video and audio) I'll start getting over the learning curve.

Re: [GmElliott] FCP Studio Install question.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Vegas is a great NLE. It does what most wedding and event videographers need. But if you do more than that, it'll fall apart. FCP is a full blown professional broadcast and film editor. Vegas is a video only editor. They are two totally different animals. To compare them is simply not an intellegent thing to do.

I have great respect for Vegas. But I won't trust it for my documentary that'll have 40 plus hours of DVCPRO-HD footage to organize, edit, and convert to film. It simply would fall flat. It isn't ment to do film. It's in a whole different universe as FCP.
