FCP and Sony Digital8 camcorder Can't Post

I'm interested in getting into some video editing at home and just attended an Apple demo of Final Cut Pro last evening (absolutely awesome product!). BTW - although I don't work on it regularly, we have an entry-level high end analog video editing system at work (Spherous, by Scitex, with Targa 2000 board), so I've seen how non-linear editing works. FCP/DV camcorder/B&W G3 FireWire system easily matches/exceeds the capabilities of our $50,000 system.
The question I have, that I can't seem to find the answer to this on either the Sony or Apple FCP site:
Does Sony's new Digital8 camcorder (I own the TRV310 model) work with Final Cut Pro in terms of "deck control". In other words, can FCP manipulate the camcorder from within the application? At the demonstration last night, the presenter directly operated the FireWire-connected Canon DV camcorder from within FCP.
This is a feature I would need for what I want to do - post-production on videos of soccer matches. I need to be able to take out a 15-30 second clip, overlay some text/graphics, then drop it right back onto the original tape as an exact replacement, frame for frame. It appeared that this could be done with the standard mini-DV/DV cameras, but when I asked the presenter about the Digital8 situation, he told me that he had heard from others that there was no "deck control" over Digital8 camcorders, and hence, it couldn't be done automatically.
Can anyone using FCP with a Sony Digital8 camcorder confirm/deny this statement?
If there is no "deck control" of Digital8 by FCP, is there a workaround to do what I want? (Yeah, I know - buy a true DV camcorder....)
Thanks in advance.
