FCP outputtig TC to video Can't Post

I need to give a VHS tape or DVD to a customer so he can preview it and make changes to a program I have edited with Final Cut Pro. Could anyone please tell me how I could enable the TimeCode numbers so it will show in the video I need to give to the customer? Is there a change in the Preference menu which I need to turn on to enable the TC so it appears in the picture when it is printed to video?

Under Effects/Video Filters/Video/ there is a timecode filter you can apply to your video which will make a "window burn" of your timecode for client review.

The problem is that since I have many layers already, this will require rendering this four hour project to just output the timecode into the picture. Surprising that in FCP there is no easy way to just enable the TC to print to video. Then when the final project is approved by the customer and final changes are made I will have to re-render again to video to get rid of timecode. In this case, I miss the days of linear editing where we would just enable the timecode to burn a window dub easily.

Why not output your (complex) timeline as is and bring the .mov back into a new sequence? Then you'll only be filtering a single layer, the render should be quick, and your "working" timeline is untouched.

The are dozens of things that are "difficult" in FCP if you have your mind set one way. Do like Apple says and "Think Different". I did that and found a way to watermark my demo disks (reprints of real productions) in DVDSP without having to render or encode anything...

Care to elaborate? I have never bothered to watermark any of my demos, but I am starting to think this is not wise, with competition starting to grow all around me, there's a higher risk that the demos may end up in the wrong hands.

Re: [sky writer] FCP outputtig TC to video [In reply to] Can't Post

I started out compositing my "bug" (an alpha channel graphic of my logo) over the entire timeline, but that involved a huge amount of rendering.

My next try was inserting the graphic as a watermark in Compressor, which worked well but required that I transcode everything twice.

One day I was actually reading the manual for DVDSP (I know, nobody ever does this...) I noticed that the subtitle tracks can also contain a graphic instead of just text, so I tried it and it worked nicely, so now all I do is drop my bug into a subtitle track and then "build" the project again using a new name. This takes only a fraction of the time required for the other options.

I've always felt that whenever I show footage that was created for a customer (although I own the copyright), I have an obligation to somehow annotate that it's not "public". If I select a scene from a DVD in a sales situation, I can do this verbally, but in the rare instances that I do not have complete control of the footage, I watermark it to avoid any misunderstanding or piracy. It's both a matter of respect for my customers and just good business.
