Favorite non-essential Mac apps and utilities... Can't Post

Hi All,

I'm an admitted Mac utility junkie. I've got a giant collection of apps and utilities that do everything imaginable but aren't absolutely necessary. I've written up a little list of the ones that I continue to use once the novelty has worn off:

http://www.JoelPeregrine.com

Let me know if you've discovered some you can't do without...

Holy cow!! That's quite a list. I must say I'm not as app savvy yet but I do like Dreamweaver. Makes someone stupid like me able to create a halfway decent web site. And I second Transmit.

Bought the new 20" iMac Intel for my wife a month ago. The Photo Booth on Tiger is cool. Isabelle racked up over 300 photos in the first few days Shocked. When we have guests come to our house we make them take a photo.

Thanks for sharing.

Media Players, I'd for sure put Filp4Mac's free WMV9 player at the top of that list!
Also, MacJanitor, CacheX, RapidWeaver, Discuss (I'm beta testing the new release, it rocks), DragonBurn instead of Toast (does the same thing for a lot less money), Amadeus II, FCP Rescue (be sure you have the correct version for 4 or 5).

Hi Ben,

I've had funky results with Flip4Mac, especially when the wmv is embedded. Any cures? I gave RapidWeaver a test run. Worked great. What is Discuss? I Googled it along with something to put it into context and I got zilch that looked like a new app. I got DragonBurn to try the multiple disc burn feature. I was able to burn three discs at the same time - one internal and two external, but realized then that they all encode at the speed of the slowest burner. I have two 16x and one 4x, so they all burned at 4x. I stopped using it when Tiger broke it and for some reason never updated it. I will now. Amadeus looks very sweet. I'm going to check it out too.

Thanks for the input!

Joel

Wow. Great app. I adjusted the blog entry to say so. Transmit is amazing. So intuitive. Even a widget! I used TinkerTool to have the transmit widget on the desktop all the time...

Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, there is something funky about embedded WMV files. I always right click them and save to disk. Then they play fine. But it's only an embedded WMV file. Well, not even that. I've had embedded WMVs play fine. But yes, there is a glitch there somewhere. But then, Windows Media Player on the Mac has always sucked pretty bad. It's almost like MS wants us to be crippled.

I have a work flow with Discuss that lets me get all my DVD disk and case set ups done super fast. And I don't have to re-build any templates each time I use a different printer. Check out the new version 4. It's totally awesome!!!!

Transmit is nice, but I'm just hooked on Fetch. I found it faster and most stable. But, that's just personal preference.

Oh, "FCP Rescue" (either version 4 or 5, depending on what version of FCP you use) for sure! List FCP Rescue for sure!!!!

Another good and free FTP app is CyberDuck.

Of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of utilities I have tried over the years (all Mac, all the time since 1989), one of the few I have kept, and actually paid for, is Path Finder [http://www.cocoatech.com/]. It adds significant functionality to finder windows.

I also like Concierge [http://www.bti.net/concierge/index.php], which adds a drawer for bookmarks to side of Safari windows.

Never heard of it. I'm downloading it right now. Thanks!

I totally forgot about Concierge! I've had it for quite a while. It is so integral to how I browse that its easy to overlook.

Thanks again Chuck!

I have you to blame for losing the last hour in Path Finder. This is what Apple's Finder should be! i'm sure as I use it more it will become second nature. Thanks for the tip!

Just installed PathFinder. Nice! It's what Finder should have been. The tabbed windows and the Drop Stack are my favorite features!

UNO is a good app to get rid of the brushed metal look. It unifies the OSX interface.

Sorry about the distraction, Joel. ;-)

My only (minor) complaints about Path Finder are that some things, like contextual menus, can initially take a few seconds to activate, and things like "reveal in finder" in Spotlight don't get redirected to Path Finder.
