File import problem Can't Post

Hey all,

I have two computers, one is a little old and can only run FCP 4.5. I logged some stuff on my new mac (FCP 5.1.4) and then my wife tried to import it from the capture scratch into a FCP 4.5 timeline and only one line of audio is coming in. Anyone know what that might be happening?

Thanks

kris

if the video is HDV you will not be able to import it. FCP 4.5 did not have HDV support. You might try transcoding the footage on the imac to DVCPro HD and try that.....

I haven't been able to import any footage captured in 5.0 into 4.5. I think it's the upgraded QT version that 4.5 can't handle. I'm not sure about that, however. But I am sure that I can't import the footage into 4.5.

What I have been able to do is open the 5.0 FCP file in 4.5. It give you a message saying that once you open it in 4.5, you can't go back to 5.0. So that might work for you.

good luck...

I have actually tried that and it doesn't tell me that I can't go back, it tells me that I can't open it in 4.5. Are you perhaps thinking of opoening up a 4.5 in 5? Then it would say that once you open in 5, you can't go back to 4.5.

I always thought you could go UP to a newer version, but not DOWN to an older one. I've never had a problem opening a project in a newer version. It just asks if you want to update the project to that version. But I've never tried to take a project back to an older version before. I just heard it couldn't be done.

Hi Kris,

As a test I took a few tapes from a firewire drive I captured using FCP 5.1.4 Universal on a MacBook Pro and dropped them into FCP 4.5 running on a 500mHz PowerBook G4. No problems. Have the clips been checked out on the computer that captured them? How about exporting new self-contained copies from FCP 5 and taking those to the computer running 4.5?
