G4+Canon XL-1 Can't Post

I’m thinking of purchasing a G4 (450 Mhz/20Gb Ultra ATA) and a Canon XL-1 for making short educational and industrial videos (10-15 min.). Will I be able to import and export the DV via the FireWire port, and edit it in the G4 without problems and without any extra hardware? And if not, what will I need? Which software should I use? (Premiere, EditDV, FinalCut...)
I have also been considering the Cassie, but I need a second Mac anyway...
Hope someone can give me advice about this.
Petter

The least problematic would be EditDV (new v1.6). It
works with G4's and Apple's built in firewire. Very
solid program.
Final Cut doesn't work yet w/G4's, and who knows about Premiere
(I've given up with that one).
Don't know what the Cassie is.

EditDV may work with Yosemite G4's, but it just crashes on Sawtooth G4's.

It does not if you plug in and turn on a DV camera. I.e. before you start EditDV, turn on a DV camera on the firewire bus.
