G4/FCP control of a VTR Can't Post

I am thinking of getting a G4 and FCP to do some video work for my company, and understand that having a VTR with computer control will make my life easier. All the VTRs I've seen have RS232 or RS422 connectors for their computer control signals. Can I use a serial adapter on the USB network to make this connection? Can FCP control a VTR this way? Or can the control be done via FireWire?

Re: G4/FCP control of a VTR Can't Post

The RS-xxx protocols are mainly for linear editing and
machine control for analog NLE. The firewire port will be
all you need if you go digital on the G4 - that would be
w/o doubt the way to go if you're not already heavily invested in analog gear.
I have not yet heard from people using a USB adapter for
serial control of a deck. My guess is that it would
work fine barring any translation errors.

No video editing software for G4! Is there? [In reply to] Can't Post

God help you if you try to find any software that will actually capture video through your firewire on a G4. EditDV tells me that it's software won't function with the "sawtooth" motherboard and every other video editing software company says I am SOL as far as doing any capturing... Yet. If anyone knows if I am wrong I'd love to hear about it.

A G4 compatible upgrade for Final Cut Pro, Verion 1.2, is due in November. My G4 is on order, so it's a race to see which will get here first...
I believe you'll want to get a video board that has connections (RGB, S-video) and an RS422 port for control. I'm still figuring out what to get. Recommendations welcome.

I've had some success capturing DV through the firewire on my ProMax (FireMax) configured G4 using Premier
