Not sure off hand what third part stuff is out there, but all UNIX systems have a built in audit tool. I bascially records everything every user does. Problem is, although it's only a text file, that text file can build up and become very large over time.

So you want to track what "someone else" is trashing?

yep i want to know that, which user and when was a file deleted. i want to add dat im using MAC OS in my macintosh.
also i have a folder in my mac connected to another mac via networking. i want to make dat folder readonly for my mac and writeonly for the other connected mac, so dat neither me nor the other mac can del the folder. and if any of us do try to del the folder then we r prompted for the owners password. can u please explain me how to change the "ownership and permision" for the above senario
thankyou

How does one dup that file? I've got two old iBooks that desparately need to reclaim hard drive space.

Running MacJanitor clears those files out. Unless you want to learn the dirty command line of Unix, you really don't want to get into the audit tools. It ain't easy to use.
