This really puts actual performance gains of speed bumps into perspective.

Your mission is to take your place at the table, pick up your fork, and eat your pie. Do not look to the left and do not look to the right. Just eat your pie. There is plenty of pie for everyone."

Hey Joel,

I'm doing research on what to get for a computer upgrade soon at this site really puts things into perspective. I currently have a 3 year old iBook G4, 1.2 which comes out at 601 on this benchmark. Your setup is 3016. Could I say that's 5x faster? Why not go for even more power with a Mac Pro Dual Dual-Core 2.66 GHz and score out at 5014? Overkill? Not as much bang for the buck?

I'm waiting on word for a deal in China that would allow us to get something new. 2 computers would be ideal. Am I better off with an iMac and 17" MacBook Pro or going big and fast? Yeah, budget makes a difference. I'll also go with an XHA1 for camera.

On the question of hard drives I've had some issues with Firewire drives like you have. I know they're cheap, but I've heard from some in the computer realm that you could get 1TB raid network drives for $600.

BTW, this deal will be shot in HDV and output to SD for now and HDV for when that becomes necessary. I also want to be able to have two computers access the footage at the same time so two editors can work on the project.

Advice?

Thanks a mil.

Adam
