HDV .m2t file on FCP question Can't Post

Okay, I admit. I'm probably the very last person in videography NOT to be HD yet. I'll get there....just no one is asking for it around here yet. Anyway, here's my problem. I subcontracted a shoot to someone who shoots with a Sony HD cam (not sure which one). He was to edit the video and then send me the clips....I put them together in FCP....and then I make the DVDs.

Usually when he works for me, I shoot the stuff, send him the captured clips. He edits it, send me the QT files. I put it together in FCP and make the DVDs. No problem. But this time, it's the stuff he shot in HD.

He wants to send it to me in HDV .m2t files. He swears FCP should be able to read this. He is on a PC and Vegas. He send me a sample clip and neither FCP nor QT could read it.

I have FCP 5.1.4 and QT 7.1.5. What can I do to be able to read and render these .m2t files?

Help and Thanks...

Velma ... if he normally works with QT files, why can't he provide you with this footage in QT? I don't know what cameras are being used, but I think most of them can downconvert the HD files to SD without any problems.

I personally don't edit in HD. Instead I shoot in HD and the conversion is done when I digitize the footage.

Velma I think you are going to experience problems without having the latest version of fcp to import .m2t files.

I was wondering the same thing. That's my next question to him.

Bruce,

I was afraid my version of FCP wouldn't handle those clips. Unsure

Someone on another forum suggested I convert it with a program called MPEG Streamclip. Anyone ever heard of that?

Yes Streamclip should work. Free program I think.

BTW ... even version 4.5 worked with HD, so I would think that the down converted files would not be an issue for you.

I went ahead and upgraded ... but starting to think all I needed was a Casablanca.

Well, Steamclip wouldn't open the test he sent. It recognized it, but when I tried to open it, the error message said "Unsupported Format."

So, now he's figured out how to export it as QT. (Did I mention he's working on vegas on a PC, if that matters.) But it's letterboxed. He said I need to change the pixel size to 1.2121.

Anyone know how to change the pixel size?

Velma have you tried to do a log and transfer in fcp? You have to open log and transfer and then point it to the folder with your m2t files. Not sure if this would work or not.

Log and transfer? Is that something new in FCP 6? I've got log and capture, but that's just to capture footage....or at least that's the only thing I've used it for. A little more explanation there, Bruce...please!

That might be new in fcp 6. On my verison of fcp, 6.0.3 it is listed right by the log and capture, so if you don't see in that menu you probably don't have it.

yes....its a new feature, it used to be the import window for P2, but is now used for XDCAM etc, so they renamed it log and transfer.
