Michael: To make the QT file, I just go to File > Export > Quicktime Movie ... then I leave the Setting at "Current Settings", include "Audio and Video", markers None, make sure Recompress is unchecked and make sure that Make Movie Self-Contained is checked, choose a name and hit Save.

In compressor, I use the 16:9 best preset, and for Video Format the field dominance is set at "Top First," and I leave it there.

So the short answer is no, I don't mess with the field order when I'm using these presets.

So if working from a HDV timeline (upper filed first) from FCP leave settings as it during export.

If I am working with HDV footage on an SD timeline, so I can reframe (pan zoom) if needed. i would leave it as it (lower field first) and export.

So in compressor the field is set at upper field first for 16:9 SD video? That's surprising since SD video is lower field.

Michael

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

Excellent tests David! Paving that HDV road before I get there. Wink

Just one questions about your chapter markers - I set them up on the timeline and export a reference movie with DVDSP markers checked. Seems to really speed up setting up the DVD having the markers all there. Do you set the markers in DVDSP?

Ah, yes forgot about that. I don't do that because I usually change my mind during the DVD authoring stage as to where the markers should be so I like to set them within DVDSP. But thanks for bringing that up, didn't realize that you could set them in FCP and keep them by using a reference file.

Thanks Scott, I will give Nattress a shot ...

Question for you: do you add an audio filter to the nested sequence -- something to make sure that the levels don't exceed a certain point? In other words, is there a "broadcast safe" for the audio?

Hey David,
that's called mixing! ;) I actually take each audio source into peak and eq and compress them there then bring them back into fcp and mix accordingly. My background previous to video was recording engineering so I treat it like a multitrack mix. Sometimes I'll output the final mix to a stereo file and go back into peak for a little more compression and eqing just to smooth out any rough spots... depends though.. FInal cut isn't that great for audio sweetening (hence soundtrack pro) and I'm not thrilled with how soundtrack pro references the enter audio file instead of just what you have actually used in your sequence.

Hey Michael,

No need to to work in an SD timeline to reframe your HDV... You can just do that in the HDV sequence.. When it scales down it'll have the same or better quality because it's working with the same pixels..

About the field thing... I leave it at whatever compressor sets it to when I drag the hdv file into it to compress for SD DVD... It's my understanding that the field setting is telling compressor what the dominant field is for the video being put in..it doesn't dictate the out put field dominance there... I may be wrong though. :)
