HDV render problems in FCP 5.04 Can't Post

I am editing a wedding ceremony in native HDV format in FCP. I am having to color-correct/brighten most of the raw footage before working with it because of the dark ceremony location. This is usually no biggie. I just make some basic adjustments and let the footage render overnight while I'm sleeping.

However, this current ceremony is doing very strange things. I will highlight a clip and Render it, and as usual the little window will come up with the time remaining. I go away for an hour or so, and when I come back the window is gone, but the clip is not rendered! It still has the red line over it in the timeline.

I'm not running any other software while rendering. The only thing that seems to work is when I break the clips into smaller clips, which just means more work down the road.

This is very frustrating. I would love some help with this if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this.

Thank you in advance!!
Chris

Go to the Sequence menu, check the Render All and Render Only options. Make sure every single level of render both video and audio is checked.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that, but no luck. I ended up just recapturing the clips, and they rendered fine after that. Must have been a corrupt capture or something strange.

Thanks again! Smile

Another thing that will help with editing HDV footage is to capture and edit it with the Apple Intermediate Codec for HDV. There's no image quality loss and you'll be working with an I-Frame only platform that will perform much faster and easier than native HDV.

Are you sure that you have enough room on your scratch disk where the render files are being saved? If not, it will progress until the disk is full (or the preset minimum free space has been reached) and then quit. At least, that's what happens in FCP 3. When you cut it up into smaller segments, there may be enough room to save some of them, but eventually another clip will fail to finish.

To correct, go into preferences and pick a scratch disk with enough free space.

Yeah, there was plenty of room on the scratch disk. I was rendering other clips on either side of the clip in question, and they rendered with no problems. It was just one particular clip. I just recaptured and all the problems disappeared.

It's the only time that's ever happened in seven weddings and six short films that I've shot on my FX-1 and captured with the HDV108060i codec.

Thanks for the advice, though. Smile

Now that you mention it, I did have something like that happen once. Something gets glitched in the file on capture and only thing that works is recapture...

Things like this are why I wear my hair parted widely down the middle...Laugh
